Moving Minds is our philosophy, our way of being. Moving Minds: motivating people and turning ideas into action. Our scope reaches beyond boarders, our mind is open toward what lies ahead, we encourage innovation and the challenging of fossilised systems/systems reluctant to change.
Our university college is a quality-minded institution which offers higher education, research and community service. UC Leuven-Limburg has been inspired by the valuable and diverse Christian school of thought in dialogue with and at the service of and open, pluralistic and intercultural society.
Our study programmes, applied research and community service are the concerted action of our students, employees, the work field and society. Together they form a powerful and creative ensemble with an international outlook and a strong commitment to (EU) regional development.
Our university college trains inspiring professionals, broadminded world citizens, and strong personalities who contribute to a sustainable and just society and consider this as a lifelong project.
At the foundation of our university college, lies the appreciation for each employee, student and partner. What makes UC Leuven-Limburg strong is them forming unique links, making one formidable chain. As an organization, we contribute to an enjoyable and inspiring work- and study environment, ruled by cordiality and respect. By giving one another trust, we enhance everyone’s involvement and we strengthen the UCLL-community.
Research at UC Leuven-Limburg is unquestionably practice-oriented. Our research provides answers to present or foreseen problems in the professional field. Therefore, a close link with the professional field is essential. The link is established through education and research: e.g., professionals involved in teaching assignments, student assignments in the work field (including internships), professionals involved in research activities,…
The regional interconnectivity of the institution within the region of the Provinces of Flemish-Brabant and Limburg is established via close contacts with local governments and representative bodies. Our relevance for the region is a strong starting point to put our research in an international perspective. Framing contextual professional needs in a more global framework, where good practices can be shared and one can learn from each other’s experiences, leads to more sustainable solutions. Therefore, we consider a strong international network as important as our regional one.
The research activities are closely related to our study programmes. The thematic focus of our research priorities contribute to the content of our programmes. UC Leuven Limburg’s policy aims to maximize the interaction between research and education. This means that both students and teaching staff are involved in research practice. We also introduce research output in any study program wherever possible. A quarter of our staff is involved in research projects, and 80% of the researchers has teaching assignments. Information and research competences are gradually developed in every study program.
At UC Leuven-Limburg we attach a great deal of importance on quality and quality assurance. With this in mind we’ve devised an integrated a system for quality improvement and control. The following principles are key:
Pursuing appreciative quality assurance
We start from the confidence that everyone seeks quality and that there are basic quality standards.
The PDCA cycle is the foundation for systematic quality assurance. The mission, vision and strategic priorities guide the continuing improvement of quality. Prior successes and strengths inspire quality improvement.
Quality assurance is everyone’s interest: students, personnel, management, alumni and professionals. Everyone is vigilant where quality improvement is concerned and should ask critical questions with an appreciative spirit and based on mutual trust.
Quality assurance is aimed at all fields (education, research and services (R&S), student policy, HR, ICT, etc.) and target groups from the organisation (students and personnel, training, expertise units, groups and services, UC Leuven-Limburg). Collaboration between the various fields and levels strengthens quality.
We are expanding a system whereby work is being constantly carried out in improvement and quality control. Additionally, we are systematically focussing on certain themes because this keeps the organisation on its toes and stimulates taking action.
Just like all fields and groups, all programmes have drawn up a policy plan that provides the most important policy priorities for the programmes. This policy plan is drafted in accordance with in-depth internal and external analyses. For the external analysis, dialogue committees are formed with external members who give input on the programme. In addition, we frequently monitor the quality of the theme (thematic quality control). The programmes also carry out an analysis on which external experts give feedback. This input is also included in the policy plan. Once a year, the programme drafts a state of affairs and a biennial management meeting is held during which the programme demonstrates what it has already achieved and what it has still to achieve. All of this results in possible adjustments to the policy plan.
In the 2015-2017 period, the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (De Nederlands-Vlaamse Accreditatieorganisatie (NVAO)) visited all Flemish higher educational institutions in the framework of an extended review of the institutions. It presented its findings on 11 September 2017. UC Leuven-Limburg was already delighted with what the NVAO had to say about the university college. According to Marc Vandewalle, Vice-Chancellor UC Leuven-Limburg: “We are especially pleased that the quality of our university college and the enthusiasm of the employees have made such an impression. We are also very happy with the appreciation for our new system of quality assurance.”
We engage in a wide range of activities with our partners. In our new partnerships the institution will cooperate in more research and educational projects with fewer partners. Our vision on international partners is shaped as a piramid. In the lowest tier we find over a 100 partner institutions with whom we work on general student and staff mobility. Higher up, one will find partners with whom we are benchmarking our degree programmes, work on common research projects, or even organising multiple degree programmes.
