The Silesian University in Opava (Slezská univerzita v Opavě) is a university offering tertiary education and having public legal status.
Silesian University in Opava (Slezská univerzita v Opavě) is involved in several international programmes of cooperation in education – LLP, CEEPUS, development programmes of the Czech Ministry of Education, Aktion, DAAD scholarships, Visegrad fun...d, and others. Most of these programmes are used for student and staff exchanges.
Double/multiple/joint degrees: A joint supervision programme (co-tutelle) at the third cycle (doctoral) level is available at SU with a partner in Germany (Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg), while a full double degree programme is being established at the first cycle (bachelor) level with a partner in Finland (Oulu University of Applied Sciences). A joint degree programme at the second cycle (master) level is prepared with a partner in Slovakia (Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice). Establishment of further programmes of this type is under consideration.

Basic admission requirements are:

• For admission to a bachelor study programme - full secondary education or full secondary professional education completed with the secondary school leaving exam ("maturita exam").
• For admission to a master study programme - completed first level of higher education (“bachelor degree”).

Admission requirements for degree study programmes, as well as the deadline for applications, together with the date, form and overall content of the admission exam are established by the dean of the faculty and are published on the faculty or university official notice board and on the internet by each faculty.
Applications have to be submitted within the deadline and must be completed with all the supporting documents specified by the faculty. Depending on the requirements of the faculty or the certain degree programme, applicants need to go through the admission procedure which may include written tests, exams or an oral examination that are relevant to the applicant’s field of study.
Students from foreign universities can come to study at the Silesian University in Opava for a semester or the whole academic year in selected courses as exchange students within Erasmus or Exchange Programme. The Silesian University in Opava, legitimate member of European University Association, belongs among the top five universities created after 1989. Immediately after its inception, the university provides students with comprehensive education in the fields of humanities and economics areas. At the Silesian University Campus, future academic specialists are preparing for the professional or scientific life in the fields of history, physics, mathematics, literature, language, gastronomy, health care, multimedia and art areas. Currently, the Silesian University in Opava has three faculties – the Faculty of Philosophy and Science in Opava, the School of Business Administration in Karvina, the Faculty of Public Policies in Opava – and the Institute of Mathematics in Opava. The faculties offer interested parties several dozen bachelor´s, master´s and doctoral degree programs, but can not forget the seventeen year old activities in education of the University of the Third Age. In the academic year 2012/2013, number of students in all parts of the Silesian University in Opava, exceeded the number of eight thousand.
It was established by the law (Nr. 314/1991 - in Czech only) passed by the Czech National Council on July 9, 1991.
In 1999 the Mathematical Institute in Opava was established after its separation from the Faculty of Philosophy and Science, and in 2008 several other institutes were separated from the same faculty and the Faculty of Public Policies in Opava was created.
In 2011 the total number of the students was more than 9000 involved in approximately 50 study programmes.
Slezská univerzita v Opavě / Silesian University in Opava, Czech Republic, has participated in the Erasmus Programme since 1999. The number of students and employees participating in the Erasmus Programme is increasing every year.The conditions are set by the Czech law and by the Scholarship Regulations of the Silesian University in Opava.
The cultural life in Opava is centred around the Silesian Theatre, the Silesian Museum, the House of Art, the Marionette Theatre and numerous private galleries.
Events reaching over the regional borders take place here every year. The most important ones are: the Bezruč Opava Festival, the Festival of Spiritual Music, the Young Organ Players Competition, the Worldwide Orchestra Conducting Courses and ETNOJAZZ - International Festival of Ethnic and Jazz Music.
Opava‘s past and present has been rich in sports. Opava is represented by the SFC Opava football team, by HC Slezan in ice-hockey and by BK Opava in basketball. Horse riding has been a traditional sport in Opava. At the Faculty there is a system of compulsory Physical Education for the first-year students; optional PE lessons for the people interested, and a number of courses offered every year by the Department of Physical Education.
