The Catholic University of Applied Sciences of North Rhine – Westphalia is Germany’s largest church-sponsored university with state certification. The Catholic University of Applied Sciences of North Rhine - Westphalia focuses on quality education, practical training and applied research while seeking to instil a Christian sense of character and personality in its students. With campuses in Aachen, Cologne, Münster and Paderborn, it is Germany’s largest church-sponsored private university with state certification. It was founded in 1971 by the five Catholic dioceses of North Rhine - Westphalia and is refinanced in large part by the state of North Rhine - Westphalia.
The Catholic University of Applied Sciences has around 3,500 students, 100 full-time professors and 300 adjunct faculty members. It provides its students a personal atmosphere with practical purpose. Students can choose degrees in social services, health science or theology. They can also select an individual concentration to help them develop their own interests. The Catholic University of Applied Sciences conducts important research in the fields of social services, health science and practical theology. The purpose is to find answers and convey the results to practitioners. Its research specialises in nursing, substance abuse, substance abuse prevention, health, social psychiatry, gender, transculturalism, ageing and disability.
Part-time master’s degree programmes in continuing education are goal specific, designed to give professionals the skills they need to advance their careers. The university offers degree programmes in social management; cooperative management; substance abuse treatment; supervision; school management; as well as marriage, family and life counselling.

With over 1,200 students and two departments, the Cologne campus is the largest of the university’s four divisions. It also houses the offices of the university’s central administration.
Over the past decade, the Cologne campus’s Department of Social Sciences has established itself as one of the leading departments for social sciences in Germany (as ranked by the German higher education think tank CHE), and is regarded highly by students and professors alike. Its programmes are divided into three fields: social work and health; childhood, youth and family; and education and societal integration. The department’s research is focused on substance abuse treatment as well as the field of gender, interculturality and integration. The department is also home to the newly-founded German Institute for Addiction and Prevention. The Cologne campus’s Department of Health Science trains students for careers in management and teaching. The curriculum has a practical purpose and instils Christian values in the students, while a quality management system ensures effective teaching. The department includes the Centre for Nursing Education and School Development in Health Care, the Network for Careers in Health Care and the German Institute for Applied Nursing Research.
Cologne is the largest city in North Rhine – Westphalia and has a population of close to one million. It is known for its cathedral, its Karneval celebrations and its Kölsch. It has a 2000-year-old history, a rich cultural and architectural heritage and plays host to world-renown events. The city’s many universities give students an astounding range of study options and extracurricular activities. The Cologne campus is easy to reach from the city centre and is within walking distance from the Rhine.

Each of the university’s four campuses has a department of social services. In addition, the Cologne campus has a department of health science and the Paderborn campus has a department of theology.
The Department of Social Services is represented on all four campuses. Its degree programmes prepare students for careers in social work and special education that require academic backgrounds.
The part-time degree programmes in the Department of Health Science train students for supervisory positions in healthcare management and in nurse training.
The bachelor’s degree in practical theology trains students for community service and religious teaching at the primary and secondary levels.
