The university sets priorities on two levels by defining profile areas and profile topics. The research profile is evaluated on a regular basis and refined progressively. The following six profile areas and one profile topic shape TU Darmstadt’s research profile.
Profile area Cybersecurity: The security of information and communication technologies has become a key prerequisite for the functioning of society and economy. The guiding themes are the technological bases and the requirements for cybersecurity and privacy protection.
Profile area Internet and Digitisation: Intelligent networks with fast and reliable communication channels and their growing interdependencies with incumbent infrastructures (Industry 4.0) will enable entirely new services. This profile area addresses corresponding technologies and applications as well as the requirements they need to meet.
Profile area Matter and Radiation Science: The profile area focuses on the scientific exploitation of particle beams at major research infrastructures. To this end the international “Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research” (FAIR) is under way in Darmstadt as one of the highest investments in large-scale research infrastructures in Europe.
Profile area Thermo-Fluids & Interfaces: Research in this profile area research creates the basis for the development of new and energy efficient products, processes and machines. The research fields of fluid dynamics, combustion and heat & mass transfer are investigated using methods from various disciplines.

Profile topic Computational Engineering: Computer based methods are used in order to study complex engineering applications and natural phenomena.
