It was officially founded in 1971 but the original institute, the “Königliche Werkmeisterschule für Maschinenbauer”, was established in 1890. Nevertheless, the fundamental concept has remained unchanged throughout the years: study and teaching geared towards practical problem-solving, taught by highly experienced professors, cementing the link between theory and practice. True to this phi...losophy, the university offers over 50 study options, in seven different faculties: applied social sciences, architecture, design, computer sciences, economics, engineering, information technology and electrical engineering. More than 12,500 students are currently enrolled at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts. The world is changing – and so does a modern university.
Versatile, interdisciplinary and practical – this is the guiding principle for research at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts. Approximately 200 researchers work on projects in a wide range subjects. Innovation is created by the interaction between science and economics, and it is therefore not surprising that 95 % of all research is in cooperation with external partners. This provides diverse benefits, particular for our students. Our Vice-Rector for Research, Development and Transfer, Prof. Dr. Andrea Kienle believes that students who have worked in such research projects are particularly attractive as potential employees for private and public employers. With easy access to research facilities, Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts is a very attractive partner for small and medium-sized businesses in Dortmund and the surrounding region. A network based on mutual exchange means mutual benefits for all concerned.
From the university out into the world, from the world to the university: This characterizes international diversity at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts. Irrespective of where our students come from, whether Brazil, Cameroon, Cuba or Ukraine, they all help shape the international profile of Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts. “The university thrives on the cultural variety of our students,” – says Gisela Moser, lecturer for Student Services and International Affairs. The other side of internationality means awakening potential. The goal is to motivate students to go abroad for at least one semester. By going abroad, students improve their language skills, develop intercultural competences and develop their own personality.
We are committed to supporting both students and staff in achieving an equitable balance between studies, professional and family life. This is not just a question of a good and reliable child care but also finance, and the organization of study and work. With a helpdesk and central office, the family supports and advises students and staff on such issues. The service can also provide help with arranging home care and study or business matters.
Study or vocational training? This is the question a lot of young people have to answer when they are about to leave school. At Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts the answer could be both! The combined studies programme integrates studying for a Bachelor at the university and vocational training in a company. The advantages are explained by Prof. Dr. Sabine Sachweh, study coordinator for “Softwaretechnik”: “The theoretical lessons go hand in hand with practical education. Moreover, the transition to working life is already done and most of these students hope to take a job in the same company after finishing their combined studies course.” The company pays the usual salary and thus supports studying at the same time. At the end of seven to nine semesters you have two professional qualifications: vocational training certified by the IHK or HWK and a Bachelor from Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts.
The Master is an advanced professional degree within the academic degree system. It may be studied following the Bachelor degree (or an equivalent) or may be resumed after a period of professional occupation. Universities may demand additional requirements (e.g. an exceptionally good final grade in the first professional degree) The standard study length is between 2 and 4 semesters. The Master is an academic and professional qualification, and their holders can generally be admitted to doctoral programmes.
The degree is not the goal but only the means for a career. The contents of our study courses are therefore based on the demands of the practical field.
Aside from the specialized knowledge and understanding, the promotion of individual personalities, that find careers in architecture, take center stage in the education.
Starting in winter semester 08/09 the Architecture department is offering the eight semester course of study recommended by the Architectural Association (Architektenkammer).
In the first two semesters, basics in technical construction as well as methodical and creative basics are taught, that enable the students to explore particular fields.
On this basis, the following 6 semesters focus on technical and scientific knowledge as well as the integral work methods of architects in design and construction projects. The final project and a structured offering of electives enable the student, according to his/her particular skillset or wishes to prepare, through an in depth study in the mandatory modules or a specialization (starting on September) for the Master course of study in Architecture + Metal Construction (Architektur + Metallbau).
Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest applied sciences and at the same time a permanent motor of technical progress. The tradition, which puts continuous innovation on center stage, ranges from the draftsmen of the tools for the construction of the Egyptian pyramids to Leonardo da Vinci and the modern engineering profession.
In Mechanical Engineering, machinery and equipment are designed and operated for various applications, from buildings to vehicles and power plants and production facilities. To an increasing degree, the manifold areas of application require profound specialized knowledge aside from a sound basic education in order to provide for a current and comprehensive state of knowledge.
