Flensburg University of Applied Sciences’ (FUAS) roots in our region date back to 1852 when the Royal Danish School for Navigation was founded. This lay the foundation for what is a firm part of our identity still today: There was and still is a close connection between our university, our region and its people. Flensburg, the Flensburg Firth and local industry have shaped our university, our... degree programmes and research activities: the broad range of fields we teach and research include maritime technologies, business and energy as well as biotechnology, communication and engineering.
Our professors and teaching staff are very accessible for our 4000 students on the beautiful and green Flensburg campus – even outside class. All of our professors have a track record of working in industry; our students benefit from this real-life work experience in application-oriented classes equipping them with what they need for a successful future. As a university of applied sciences these roots in application and industry are a relevant part of our identity and they stretch out into studies and teaching as well as into study and research projects.
Because of our firm roots and the long-standing tradition that comes with them, we have established partnerships and networks reaching far beyond the borders of our region. We participate in numerous research projects exploring innovative approaches and defining standards. Working across borders as well as across disciplines is part of our every-day work in projects, research institutes and centres.
The research carried out at Flensburg University of Applied Sciences is fuelled by the people behind it as well as by the environment they work in. Students, professors, research and teaching staff in our four faculties work in state-of-the-art laboratories, testing and simulation facilities.
At FUAS we care about tomorrow today. Our degree programmes, research projects and partnerships have a strong focus on finding answers to the questions of the future. We aim to qualify our students for successful careers and give them the roots that will allow them to soar. We also play an active role in creating a bright future for our region and beyond.
At FUAS we want to prepare our students for successful careers in Germany and around the world. The range of our study programmes is also designed to match the strengths and the market of our region; this includes the maritime industry as well as the energy industry.
Whether you want to study for a bachelor’s degree or your master’s, FUAS has a wide range of degree programmes to offer. Some of them taught entirely in English, others including a number of classes taught in English. No matter which of our programmes you choose, you will be taught by people with considerable working experience in the industry. So our teaching staff will not only guide you through the theoretical aspects of their fields of expertise but also share their real life working experience with you.

Flensburg is more than just a great place to study, it is a great place to live. If you want to study and live in an innovative, vibrant environment right by the sea, look no further. If after a day of lectures, classes and revision you need a change of scenery, you could of course enjoy FUAS’ green campus or stroll along the picturesque harbour in the centre of town or you could take changing the scenery to the next level and go sailing or wind surfing.
Flensburg is maritime – this goes for the city with its harbour set against the beautiful skyline as well as for FUAS with its long tradition of maritime study programmes.
Your decision for Flensburg will also be a decision for our extensive network of partner universities from all over the world. We welcome students from around the world every semester and our students can broaden their horizons through exchange programmes and cooperation projects with an extensive international network. In fact, we have partner universities on each of the five continents.
Our Centre for Maritime Studies is home to the largest ship bridge simulator facility in Northern Europe, our Media Informatics programme includes full dome modules and our labs are also state of the art.
FUAS has been teaming up with partners from industry and other universities for years, this way we can provide our students with valuable experience and they can use their theses as a start to a successful career. Also, all of our professors have spent at least several years working in industry and can now pass on their valuable experience to our students.
Our innovative study programmes prepare our students for successful careers in future growth markets such as wind engineering, eHealth and biotechnology.
With a ratio of less than 50 students per professor you will be more than just a face in the crowd. Just for comparison: The average student-professor ratio at German universities is 64. If we include all our teaching staff, the ratio even goes down to 42.
We share our campus and some of our facilities with the Europa-Universität Flensburg. For our students this means synergies in teaching, an extensive range of books offered in the shared library and a large variety and number of courses offered by the sports centre.
We are part of a closely knit regional network of universities on both sides of the German-Danish border. Our students get to enjoy joint study programmes and projects as part of our knowledge and technology transfer.
Being a student shouldn’t be about studying only. Student life is also there to make friendships that will last a lifetime and enjoy life. It is easy for FUAS students to have the right work-life balance thanks to regular events on and off campus. This means campus cinema as well as parties and the legendary annual Kohl and Pinkel tour (you’ll have to come here to experience it).
