Fachhochschule Ottersberg (University of applied sciences in Ottersberg) recently changed its name to “Hochschule für Künste im Sozialen, Ottersberg” (University of applied sciences and arts in Ottersberg).
The new name highlights the value, success and relevance of our university. It clearly states our vision and mission that our teaching staff and students always hold to: as artis...ts committing to work for society.
With this spirit is why the university was established 45 years ago and so will it be. We respond to and support the solution finding of today’s social problems. More and more shows that some groups have neither place nor voice in the society. To release people’s creative potential and to help provide them new opportunity to express their thoughts and feeling are what our students learn and experience.
A variety of project works throughout their study brings students closer to the practical scene of social work and in contact with companies, clinics, social as well as pedagogic institutions. In this way they not only can learn from concrete samples, but also are well-prepared to work professionally later on.
In the coming years we plan to offer new programs and further education – for example, the certification as alternative practitioner.
The university aims for social practice, in which the artistic potential is seen as human’s genuine potential, regardless of social, cultural or ideological affiliations. Teaching and research focus on the development and support such potential through artistic practice in the areas of fine arts, art pedagogy, art therapy and performing arts pedagogy.
Through the study programs, the university provides students opportunity to develop their individual character to be capable to use artistic practice constructively, innovatively and for society.

Our “level one” gallery, located at Admiralitätsstraße 71 in Hamburg, is a dedicated student exhibition space, where you are encouraged to test ideas and present your work. Dynamic exhibition and event program seek to showcase in-house talent and to forge connections between the university and the outside world.
Art therapy and Art Education (fine arts course) cover a wide range of competencies, including artistic professionalism and social, pedagogic and therapeutic qualifications. Focus is placed on practice and aesthetic experience to let your continuing development as an artist grow and use your creative arts to complement therapy as an art therapist.
