The University of Applied Sciences Cologne [Rheinische Fachhochschule Köln (RFH)] is a privately run, nationally recognized university of applied sciences. Offering full-time, ‘dual’ (combining studies and training) and continuing-education instruction, students at the University can enrol in 19 Bachelor’s and 12 Master’s programmes offered in the engineering, media, healthcare managem...ent, business & law, as well as logistics management, marketing management and communication management. With an enrolment of approx. 6,500 students, the RFH ranks among the largest educational institutions in Cologne. The course of study is distinguished by small semester groups and a high degree of practical relevance achieved through project-related work, lecturers with experience in the field and close cooperation with the business community.
A course of study at Rheinische Fachhochschule is characterised by: seminar-based instruction in groups of no more than 50 students; compact, short courses of study; and application-oriented teaching.
At its campus in Neuss, RFH offers additional courses in both dual and continuing-education instruction: International Industry and Trade Management (B.Sc.), Marketing and Communications Management (B.Sc.), Logistics and Supply Chain Management (B.Sc.) and Industrial Engineering and Management (B.Sc.).
Since early 2011, our engineering graduates have enjoyed preferred access to the continuing-education Post-Graduate Programme at Loughborough University (LU).
The Automation of Solar Thermochemical Cyclic Processes for the Reduction of Hydrogen Production Costs [Automatisierung Solar-Thermochemischer Kreisprozesse zur Reduzierung von Wasserstoffgestehungskosten (ASTOR)] is a joint research project aiming to develop a continuously operated reactor generating hydrogen by means of solar energy and water. The project is a collaboration between the German Aerospace Centre (DLR), the University of Applied Sciences, Cologne (RFH) and Stausberg & Vosding GmbH und AWS Technik e.K.
For the first time ever, the project would regulate the cyclic solar thermal process for a fully automatic operation. The project focuses on the maximization of overall efficiency by means of heat recovery, the development of optimized heat exchangers and finally a fully automatic regulation of process parameters. Research activities at the RFH focus on the areas of modelling, simulation and control algorithms. The aim is to increase the efficiency of the process to the point at which solar thermal hydrogen production is comparable to processes currently in use – and CO₂ -neutral at the same time.
Digital media offer enormous potential for education and training. The University of Applied Sciences Cologne (RFH), in collaboration with the Rheinische Akademie Köln GmbH, the Cologne Game Lab (TH Koln) and other partners, is developing a forward-looking didactic and technological training concept.
GLARS (Goal-Based Learning in an Alternative Reality Setting) is a multimedia educational project for students training to become biological-technical assistants (BTA) at the Rheinischen Akademie Koln gGmbH (RAK). In a playful scenario merging school, the corporate world and home, students draw on various digital learning media, even producing some themselves.
The project partners’ core objective is to further link the training facility to the world of work and to impart application-oriented knowledge. This is done by directly integrating learning processes into a variety of real professional contexts. The RFH is involved, among other things, in the field of scientifically-based testing of digital learning opportunities.
