Reutlingen University was founded in 1855 as a College of Weaving and Textiles. It was to be an institute for textile teaching and research, founded on the initiative of local industry, the town of Reutlingen and the Kingdom of Württemberg, and it has remained true to its roots right up to the present day. Reutlingen University still offers facilities for spinning, weaving and knitting.
Our unique research building, covering 7,700 square metres, accommodates the extensive workshops for textile teaching and experimentation. The large laboratories for the spinning of cotton, worsted and woollen yarns, weaving, weft and warp knitting, and textile finishing are located in this building.
Over the course of the years the name of the institution was changed to State Engineering College, which then developed into a University of Applied Sciences, and new areas of teaching were opened up: Engineering, Business Administration, Chemistry and Informatics extended the range of subjects offered, forming the foundation for today’s Reutlingen University and its five Schools.
Throughout its history, one of the defining characteristics of the University has always been its international dimension. Whilst in the early days there were just a small number of engineers who came to Reutlingen from other countries, nowadays the University is an international educational institution, with more than 80 nationalities living and learning together on a single campus.
