The Hochschule der Bildenden Künste Saar (HBKsaar) is the Saarland’s only university of art and design. It was founded in 1989 and emerged from the initial “Staatliche Schule für Kunst” founded 1924 which changed to a “Schule für Kunst und Handwerk” in 1964, both with a strong tradition of arts and crafts. From 1971 to 1989 the school join together with the present University of Ap...plied sciences.
Since 1989 it has developed into one of the most important creative training centres in the Großregion Saarland-Western Palatinate-Alsace-Lorraine-Luxembourg- Wallonia. The HBKsaar is a public institution with about 400 students and offers a challenging and fulfilling education in subjects that are contemporary and relevant to the artistic and creative fields.
International renowned artists and designers assure an education of high quality.
The open study structure and the interdisciplinary orientation of the teaching as well as the distinctive emphasis on project works enable the students to be constantly involved in real work processes with concrete tasks. Consequently exhibitions and project presentations regularly emerged from the teaching and the research projects at HBKsaar and give innovative and creative impulses in the whole region.
Hence the HBKsaar has maintained the tradition of the Saarland school of Arts since 1924 which is associated with famous names like Boris Kleint, Frans Masereel, Peter Raacke, Robert Sessler or Otto Stein.
The main building of the HBKsaar is situated in the Saarbrücken city centre. It houses the Chancellor’s office, the administration, the studios and the lecture rooms. Furthermore a wide-ranging library, a media library, the Hochschule archive, well-equipped workshops for photography, wood, metal, model building, printing, computer and a video and sound studio provide the students with a comprehensive range of artistic, creative as well as scientific skills and experiences. The HBKsaar also maintains a facility in the UNESCO World Culture Heritage Site at the Völklingen ironworks. This site is only at 10 km from Saarbrücken and offers the students an exceptional industrial and cultural working environment. Besides the existing studios and workshops different experimental laboratories and project-based facilities for technology orientated media in art and design emerge at the Völklingen location.
The Institute for Contemporary Art in Saarland situated in Saarlouis is an affiliate institute of the HBKsaar. It offers information about the artistic projects of the region as well as substantial data about the development of the Fine Arts in Saarland. This archive is made accessible for study and research work.
The HBKsaar inaugurated in June 2010 its own gallery. It provides all students with the possibility of getting in touch with the development of contemporary exhibition culture through conceptual projects. It shows works of graduates from the HBKsaar as well as from international artists and designers. In that way, the gallery functions as a showcase to the public and produces dialogues with relevant questions on society and arts.
The HBKsaar together with the University of Art in Nancy regularly organises glass seminars and design workshops in the Centre International d’Art Verrier in Meisenthal, a commune situated in the Vosges mountain range in the neighbouring Lorraine. Students are introduced there to the techniques in glass work under the guidance of international renowned designers.
Besides the regional connection to scientific and cultural institutions and enterprises the HBKsaar has established international educational links with a great number of schools of art and design in Europe, Asia and North America.
The international orientation, the practice-based teaching as well as the interdisciplinary concept which integrates the fields of art, design and research offer a stimulating study environment for students from all over the world.
In the winter semester 2009/2010 the HKBsaar introduced the modularized system according to the Bologna process. Students can choose between a diploma degree and a bachelor degree.
The standard duration of the Bachelor degree programme is 8 Semesters and the standard duration of the Diplom degree programme is 10 semesters. The study programme is divided in into two study periods, the “Grundstudium” (4 semesters) and the “Hauptstudium” (respectively 4 or 6 semesters).
As a first-level professional qualification the HBKsaar awards the academic degree Bachelor of Arts for the bachelor degree programme and the degree Diplom for the Diplom degree programme. These are followed by master degrees programmes which end with the degree Master of Arts. The teacher training course is completed with the First State Examination.
The educational concept of the HBKsaar is project orientated which means that it is based upon the principle of connecting different disciplines and skills. Thus, new teaching and study projects which cross boundaries are being developed continuously. This structure concentrates on flexibility and provides the students with an interdepartmental and interdisciplinary learning experience.
Beside a close interconnection with several scientific and cultural institutions such as the Saarland University, the Academy of Music, the Stadtgalerie Saarbrücken, and the neighbouring academies of Fine Arts in France, the HBKsaar sees a further challenge in the confrontation with specific assignments given by public and private enterprises with the aim of increasing the students’ awareness for recent and future developments of the society. This co-operation results in semester works which deal with concrete design projects as well as art-projects in public space.
Further the HBKaar cultivates an extensive international cooperation with universities of art and design all over the world. The international orientation, the practice-based instruction and the interdisciplinary concept which integrate the fields of art, design and scientific research offer student an interesting and stimulating study environment.
