Since the 1st September 2001, Hochschule der Medien has brought together the combined know-how of the former University of Printing and Media, an educational institution with over 100 years of tradition, and the University of Librarianship and Information whose history reaches back to 1942. With 16 Bachelor’s degree programmes and 6 Master’s degree programmes, a part-time MBA, and a doctora...l programme, Hochschule der Medien covers a broad spectrum of media expertise: from printed media to electronic media, from mass media and media theory to media production, from media design to making media available.
At Hochschule der Medien, students learn in modern lecture theatres as well as in workshops and studios, at printing machines or behind the camera. Exciting practical projects in the University’s laboratories or in cooperation with partner companies complement theoretical knowledge and scientific working methods. Originally the university had two campusses. Since 2014 the university consists of one central campus in Stuttgart Vaihingen with a new faculty building, symbolizing "one media world".
Exchange students are able to choose from a variety of English-taught Minor Programs. Each Minor is a one semester long set program. Most Minors run every semester, and normally consist of 30 ECTS credits. Please note that it is NOT possible to pick and mix courses from different Minors. In order to be admitted to one of our Minors, we expect students to have a language level of B2 or higher in English (non-native speakers need to include proof of language proficiency in their application documents).
The Minor Program Advertising and Publishing focuses on the planning, design and production of communications in advertising and publishing. It covers the relevant areas on the path from the “first idea“, via visual design, to the production and dissemination of the finished product. With the specialisations Analysis & Strategy, Design & Advertising as well as Publishing & Production, students learn about all the phases which are important in the conception, publishing and distribution of printed and digital media, including mobile web-apps.
During one semester, students become familiar with the most important methods in the areas of research, analysis and marketing, and will gain insight into the strategies and psychology of market communication. Alongside this, they become acquainted with the various processes involved in creative design such as design trends, photography and interaction design. Additionally, our students are involved in the different stages of publishing and advertising - from the selection and production of appropriate contents, their preparation for the most diverse forms of distribution, to duplication and distribution. A parallel practical placement/internship in the printing workshop of the University helps to make the pre-printing, printing and post-printing processes understandable.
In this way, the path taken for an advertising campaign from conception to a printed poster which can be touched and which – if positioned in the right location – can be seen by millions of people is vividly demonstrated. Students will also see how a book is transformed from an idea into a multi-media product which fulfills the needs of a wide variety of readers and users with texts, images and sound.
Business information is distributed all over a company’s ecosystem: from operational enterprise resource planning (ERP), to customer relationship management systems (CRM) towards social media platforms and external open data or market research data warehouse systems. The Minor Program Business Analytics focuses on the management and integration of business information which is stored in large heterogeneous and distributed information systems.
The Minor Program Games Technology provides a sound introduction to the technological facets of game development in theory and practice.
Students will get a brief overview of the history of game development, an introduction to business aspects and to the basics of youth protection regulations, as well as an introduction to games design. They will also obtain profound knowledge about the architecture of games systems and gain an in-depth insight into the functionality of their components.
The Minor Program Media Creation & Management gives international students the opportunity to gain inside knowledge in creating and capitalizing media. This includes having the idea, putting it into practice with production, and managing the results and finances. If you are interested in different aspects of media business, if you want to be creative whilst learning more about operating media services, and to invent new business models – Media Creation & Management is the right program for you.
The Minor Program Visual Communication is available every winter semester with the subject of interface and interaction design. Students will get an introduction into the structure of user interfaces, acquire methodological knowledge in user-centered design, design interfaces for desktop or mobile systems, as well as learn basic skills of scripting languages. Lectures in information technology and psychological processes in the field of the visual communication between man and machine will extend the state of knowledge.
The program "Mobile Media" is no Minor program. This means that there might occur time conflicts between some of the individual courses listed below. There is, however, the possibility to select additional courses from the area of Language, Culture and Society, if a certain study load needs to be achieved.
