The Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design, with a history extending back over 250 years, is one of the largest art academies in Germany. With 20 academic study programmes in Architecture, Design, Fine Arts, Art Education and Art Related Studies-Conservation, it provides a broad spectrum of educational and research opportunities to approximately 900 students.
ABK Stuttgart provides an ...outstanding teaching and learning environment. One of its “trademarks” is interdisciplinarity – meaning there are interdisciplinary courses and seminars as well as joint projects of the individual study programmes. Students study in small course groups, which allows professors to provide intensive support. We are focussed on developing students’ creative and artistic skills as well as on imparting technical, practical and professional knowledge. The other “trademark” of the Academy is its over thirty workshops. They allow students to implement their ideas and concepts, using analogue and digital techniques. The workshops are of fundamental importance for the students" education and are places of interdisciplinary activity, a specific trait of ABK Stuttgart.
ABK Stuttgart provides experimental ground to the unity of teaching and research and promotes innovation in art and design. It also puts an emphasis on academically sound teaching programmes.
It further offers the postgraduate study course “Meisterschüler/in as part of the Weissenhof Programme of Fine Arts” to promote innovative projects and outstanding artists. ABK Stuttgart is one of the few art academies in Germany that is entitled to award doctoral and post-doctoral degrees.
The many contacts the Academy has made with national and international universities worldwide and the exchange programmes it offers allow students to study abroad. However, they may also gain intercultural experience while studying at the Academy. The international stance of ABK supports students in establishing a broad professional network for their future activities.
The Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design is a legal entity under public law and a state-owned institution. It has the right to institutional self-government within the framework of the law. Its status is equivalent to that of a scientific university.
The Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design offers a number of awards, prizes and scholarships to support young artists and recognise excellence in artistic ability. In this context, we often work in close cooperation with external partners. This includes the Deutschlandstipendium (Germany Scholarship), the Scholarships from the State Graduate Sponsorship Programme (Landesgraduiertenstipendium), the Baden-Wuerttemberg Scholarship (Baden-Württemberg-Stipendium), the DAAD Prize and the Fukuoka Scholarship.
Further prestigious awards are The Academy Prizes given by ABK Stuttgart on the occasion of its annual “Tour” as well as the Erwin Heinle Prize, the Herta Maria Witzemann Prize and the Forder-Koje Prize offered by the Association of Friends and Sponsors of the Academy.
Naturally the Stuttgart Academy keeps reacting to new aesthetic tendencies and technological developments in the liberal and applied arts, and the variety of teaching positions - this polar, objective tension of which Heuss spoke - still marks the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design today. There is no strict school formation, there is no binding Academy style; instead, there is a pluralism of styles and schools of thought, which enables the continuation of the proven and appropriate and creative reaction to new challenges and impulses.
The Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design has opened itself up increasingly in recent years. Contact with foreign institutions now exceeds 50 co-operations within and outside of Europe. The share of foreign students has been approximately 10% for many years. Representatives of 20 nations from all around the world are studying at ABK Stuttgart.
