Architecture is the science and art concerning the design, technical, economical, ecological and social planning of buildings. This involves identifying and coordinating many complex requirements. These include everything from the historical and social environment to functionality, design and economics, to the suitability of the means and materials used. The quality of architecture, including i...nterior architecture and urban planning, is measured by the comprehensive consideration of and provision for all of these requirements.
A general education makes way for a flexible career after graduating. Jobs in the field of architecture and construction range from architectural artists and design architects, who concentrate on architectural theory and visual arts, to engineers, who technically design buildings or furniture, to construction site foremen.
The University of Applied Sciences is situated in the centre of Stuttgart, the "City of Architects", and is a university with a nationwide reputation that unifies all multidisciplinary skills of construction in one location. The bachelor/master system offers challenging courses in architecture, interior architecture, urban planning and project management, where students will be imparted solid knowledge on design, technology and organization.
Focus is on a strongly practical approach to planning and construction, as well as other, integrative teaching methods. Students work intensively on campus, in the studio and in small groups. All of this is with direct supervision from professors and visiting lecturers from the departments of architecture, interior architecture, urban planning and project management, as well as the neighbouring specialized departments of building physics, civil engineering and surveying.
At Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences study courses are characterized by depth of training and close relationship to practice. Optimal support by professors is guaranteed at all times due to the limited number of students. Often a specialization and setting individual priorities is possible already in the Bachelor"s degree.
Civil engineers accompany construction projects from the planning, design and construction to completion and billing for construction services. For this extensive knowledge construction and statics, building physics and the appropriate legal and safety regulations is needed. You can find civil engineers in management positions of all sectors of the construction industry, such as construction companies and planning offices, institutions and authorities of the municipalities, states and government. The Bachelor degree course in civil engineering offers the focus on structural engineering, water and transportation and construction management.
The Bachelor program Infrastructure Management combines the course contents of civil engineering with topics from urban planning, energy supply and project management. The budding infrastructure managers are educated to optimally combine the interfaces between the project stakeholders. Potential employers are infrastructure businesses like public utilities and transportation, utility companies and the public sector.
Graduates of the Bachelor program Civil Engineering and Business Management are educated in a combination of study content from civil engineering and from business administration both on the energy-efficient development of building projects, as well as the economic property management. Through the holistic view on the planning and construction and the facility management, they are qualified for taking on management tasks in the construction and real estate industry.
After a successful Bachelor degree, in addition to possibilities in practice a series of consecutive Master courses are available to deepen the knowledge. The Master course Civil Engineering/Tunnel Building educates students for tasks with constructive-geotechnical focus.
In the Master course structural Engineering, graduates of Bachelor Civil Engineering can deepen their skills in planning and construction of complex engineering structures.
The transport-related curriculum of the Bachelor"s degree are picked up and deepened in the Master program of Transportation Infrastructure Management. All modes of transport and the different forms of mobility are included in these master courses.
The Masters of Environmental Protection, International Project Management and Urban Planning are also available for graduates of a Bachelor of engineering.
The researchers at Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences conduct mostly interdisciplinary work, with focus on building research, and have developed and coordinated extremely successful national and international research projects in recent years. This success shall be expanded further.
The Institute of Applied Research (IAF) serves as the central contact point for research activities at the university. Here, professors and researching employees can get informed on advertised research projects, obtain financial support or assistance on the processing of new applications and support on project management of ongoing projects.
Furthermore, the IAF promotes interdisciplinary communication between the competence centres of HFT Stuttgart and conducts external research marketing with the aim to advance application-oriented, interdisciplinary research.
The IAF and its members promote the education of students, and contribute towards the more practical aspects teaching, in that they integrate findings from research projects into teachings, and offer students project-related bachelor lab work or master theses and the opportunity to collaborate in research projects.
Climate protection, energy efficiency, sparing use of resources and increasing demands on noise and heat insulation are presenting ever new challenges for building planning. In response to the increasing complexity in construction and the growing demand for well-educated and trained specialists, in particular regarding heat and noise insulation, HFT Stuttgart offers an independent Building Physics bachelor programme – the only programme of its kind in Germany.
This programme trains specialist engineers in all disciplines of building physics. Building on a base of mathematics, physics and metrology, it covers the fields of heat, noise and fire protection, room acoustics and psychoacoustics, energy and environmental technology, building damage analysis and fire protection, and solar energy and daylighting. Yet, building physics is not only a pure application of physics to structures and buildings, but also encompasses areas of technical acoustics in industry, integration of regenerative energy strategies to protect the environment, and noise protection in urban planning.
Another focus of the programme is the close connection with applied research, which is being conducted highly intensively particularly in the building physics programme. That way, students are familiarized with the latest measuring instruments and testing methods, and get involved in current research projects.
Given the broadness of education and the extremely practical approach, the career opportunities are exceptionally good. Awaiting engineers specialized in building physics are many fields with optimal entrance prospects, such as consulting engineer, expert, appraiser, communal energy consultant or development and testing engineer.
