Since its founding 49 years ago, TU Dortmund University has developed a profile of its very own. With 16 faculties ranging from science and engineering to social sciences and cultural studies, the university currently has near to 34,600 students and 6,200 members of staff, including 300 professors. There are about 80 degree programs to choose from, some classic, some innovative, and some even u...nique to this university. We also offer a comprehensive program of teacher training for all types of school. All our scientific disciplines share a common university spirit in which interdisciplinarity, communication and cooperation are not only taught, but are actively lived by. This interactive culture creates a supportive environment that sparks technological innovation and drives advances in methods and knowledge.
The International Office is responsible for cooperation at international level. Whether you are a student, a doctoral candidate or an academic from abroad, if you are thinking of coming to Dortmund or have already joined the university, this is the place to come. The International Office also supports students from TU Dortmund University who want to study abroad.
Around 6,500 new students enroll at TU Dortmund University every year, choosing from a range of classic and innovative courses: Approximately 80 Bachelor"s and Master"s degree programs are offered, including a comprehensive program of about 30 teacher training courses. Sixty percent of TU Dortmund University"s 34,600 plus students have opted for engineering and scientific disciplines; forty percent are enrolled in cultural studies or social science programs. When they are not attending lectures and seminars, our students can join various initiatives and participate in more than 65 different university sports. We also offer a whole range of cultural activities, such as the student orchestra and the university film club.
Over 1,000 third-party funded projects bear witness to TU Dortmund University"s strong focus on research, including a range of collaborative projects such as (transregional) Collaborative Research Centers, Research Units, Research Training Groups, a Cluster of Excellence and several Horizon 2020 research consortia. Nearly 300 professors teach and research at TU Dortmund University.
The university is particularly renowned for research in its four profile areas: Production and Logistics, Chemical Biology and Biotechnology, Modeling, Simulation and Optimization of Complex Processes and Systems and Youth, School and Education Research, in which it celebrates research successes beyond disciplinary limits, and at an outstanding international level.
Strong institutional networks in the science and engineering profile areas play a significant role in TU Dortmund"s research successes. One Max Planck institute, two Fraunhofer institutes and two Leibniz institutes as well as the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) are located in close proximity to the campus.
All our scientific disciplines share a common university spirit in which interdisciplinarity, communication and cooperation are not only taught, but are actively lived by. This interactive culture creates a supportive environment that sparks technological innovation and drives advances in methods and knowledge.
Research at TU Dortmund University enjoys particular national and international visibility in its four profile areas. Research projects in these fields account for more than two thirds of third-party funding. Additionally, the University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr) pools the research strengths of its three member universities Dortmund, Bochum and Duisburg-Essen in two UA Ruhr Flagship Programs.
In the comprehensive, interdisciplinary profile area ”Production and Logistics”, researchers explore the entire life-cycle of products and production plants. Extensive cooperation between the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML) with the Faculties of Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics gives rise to a number of prominent projects and research consortia.
Industrial Engineering at TU Dortmund University is considered among the best in the country, as evidenced by its leading position in the German Research Foundation"s ”Funding Atlas”. As a latest addition in 2017, TU Dortmund University coordinates the newly established Transregio 188, a Collaborative Research Center to study ”Damage Controlled Forming Processes”. Likewise, the Faculty of Biochemical and Chemical Engineering is particularly successful in the field of material-converting production.
Dortmund is also a prominent logistics location, strengthened further by the interdisciplinary logistics research center LogistikCampus. This center was established in a joint effort by TU Dortmund University and the Fraunhofer IML to provide both scientific and technical know-how. Fraunhofer IML, TU Dortmund University and the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering (ISST) also initiated and implemented the "EffizienzCluster LogistikRuhr", a BMBF leading-edge cluster whose 180 corporate partners and 20 research institutions make it Europe’s largest logistics research project.
New developments in the biosciences depend greatly on our understanding of the underlying molecular biological processes and on the development of new microtech tools. This is why TU Dortmund University has developed a research profile area with a strong focus on Chemistry and Molecular Biology as well as a microtechnology component. Our research in Chemical Biology focuses on the function, modification and interactions between proteins and modulators. Our second focus in bioscientific research is the bio-technological production of fine chemicals and drug precursors, including the steps necessary to separate and process them.
In this profile area, the Faculties of Biochemical and Chemical Engineering, Chemistry and Chemical Biology as well as Physics participate in the Cluster of Excellence ”RESOLV – Ruhr Explores Solvation” at Ruhr-Universität Bochum. TU Dortmund University also cooperates closely with the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology (MPI) and the Leibniz Institute for Analytical Sciences (ISAS).
As early as 2014, TU Dortmund University founded its ”Center for Integrated Drug Research” in order to intensify cooperation between science and the pharmaceutical industry and becoming host to the Drug Discovery Hub with funds from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) in 2017.
Since 2012, the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Biology has been driving the research initiative ”Medical Chemistry for Dortmund”, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
Increasingly complex systems in the natural sciences, engineering and economics require new descriptive models. Such models rely on theoretical insights, but increasingly also on powerful computing, as the amounts of data involved are often very large.
The overarching hallmark of this profile area is its culture of interdisciplinary cooperation to connect various disciplines such as Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering as well as Computer Science, Mathematics, and Statistics.
TU Dortmund University hosts two Collaborative Research Centers (CRC) on the topics of model building, simulation and optimization of complex processes and systems: CRC 823 ”Statistical modeling of nonlinear dynamic processes” and CRC 876 ”Providing information by resource-constrained data analysis”, encompassing research on Big Data and Cyber-Physical Systems. Its research outcomes are applied in many fields, such as personalized medicine, resource-friendly and energy-efficient industrial engineering, sustainable traffic, and "green" logistics.
Our research on youth, school and education produces empirical research outcomes as well as research-based development concepts for the entire range of preschool, school and vocational education. The Faculty of Education, Psychology and Sociology is a major driving force behind this profile area. For three decades, its Institute for Research on School Development has continuously analyzed fundamental empirical data on the German education system. The Faculty of Mathematics contributes its strong expertise on didactic research. Research at the Faculty of Rehabilitation Science is focused on inclusive school and educational settings. The Dortmund Competence Center for Teacher Training and Educational Research (DoKoLL), the German Academy for Educational Leaders (DAPF), the Center for Applied Psychology and the Center for Higher Education Research (zhb) all contribute their skills and assets to strengthen this profile area.
