Hochschule 21 was founded in 2004 as a private University of Applied Sciences. We are located in the Hanseatic City of Buxtehude within the greater Hamburg Metropolitan Area and the wider region of the “Elbe- Weser-Dreieck”.
Since 1875 architects and civil engineers are educated in Buxtehude with academic standard. For decades the public university of applied sciences has been at the ...same place. As in 2004 the university, which was rich in tradition, has been forced to close down because of compulsory savings of the federal state budget, time was ready to try something new.
Since we focus on application-oriented courses, our students are being well prepared for their professional life in the fields of construction, engineering and health. Over the years we have also successfully established a research focus in these areas as well as focusing on creating an interdisciplinary approach. The key aim is to enhance and support the transfer of knowledge between our distinct areas of expertise.
For all undergraduate courses related to construction and engineering dual means that 50% of the academic tuition is combined with 50% practical work experience in companies. Meanwhile more than 1.000 companies endorse the philosophy of hochschule 21 and train a dual student in Buxtehude.
Duality in our health sciences courses means studying at hochschule 21 and joining a vocational training scheme at one of the training schools of our cooperating partners.
A good choice for students: hochschule 21 in Buxtehude. For more than 140 years Buxtehude has been ´university town´ hosting the Northeast Lower Saxonian public University of Applied Sciences for decades. The state-approved private university now upholds this successful tradition.
Buxtehude is a flourishing centre of medium size with about 48.000 inhabitants. Geographically positioned next to the tourist highlight "Altes Land" and the hanseatic city of Hamburg, Buxtehude has a variety of leisure offers: cinema, bowling, restaurants, festivals, hall and outdoor swimming pool, theatres and lots of sport activities. There are four dormitories for students near the school building.
With its dual concept (50% theory, 50% practice) hochschule 21 is an ideal alternative to pure academic studies. Despite the practical experience, our students benefit from small learning groups, personal contact to the lecturing tutors and several facilities, such as laboratories, a model building hall and workshops. The career center gives advise concerning applications, interviews and finding a partner company.
Our student representation StuVer stands in for all students of hochschule 21 and join in various committees. Each department has its own student representation. The StuVer-students also organize parties, movie nights, dance lessons, sports tournaments. They also publish the magazine HASI.
The library, which is open for public, provides more than 18.000 volumes and about 100 journals. Our staff help students at every step and support their research needs. We supply an online-catalogue and E-books. Students and members of hochschule 21 have WLAN access throughout our library, a guest access is possible. Internet workspaces are also available for non-students/members. Material not available can be ordered via interlibrary loan by registered users.

Five of the degree courses at hochschule 21 are open for exchange students. All of them are undergraduate programs with modules und ECTS-credit points. The courses are conducted in German language. The study system is `dual´ which means there is a constant alternation of theoretical and practical periods (duration: 3 months each) in the engineering courses. In Physiotherapy the training at a specialized vocational school (“The Elbe Clinics Stade-Buxtehude” or the higher education institution “ The Hamburg-Eppendorf University Medical Centre”) is part of the degree course.
hochschule 21, situated at the border of Buxtehude"s historical city centre, offers a very special study atmosphere. The former Hanseatic town is as well favoured by it"s neighbourhood to Hamburg and to attractive scenic spots of the surrounding holiday district.
The Dual Studies are the speciality of hochschule 21. Within one year of study there is a constant alternation of theoretical and practical periods (duration: 3 months each) in the engineering courses. In the training-integrated courses Midwifery, Nursing and Physiotherapy the training at a specialized vocational school or a higher education institution is part of the course. The Master degree course Leadership and Management Skills is organised as a part-time course enabling the students to study alongside their work.
Currently we offer seven undergraduate courses with a bachelor’s degree which are all designed to be “dual”. In addition we offer one postgraduate master programme (part time).
All courses are organised in a modular structure. Our graduates benefit from a high quality academic education and intensive practical training. Our dual structure comprises a 50 % part of practical work, either under the envelope of an employment with a company or as part of a dual college structure, depending on the courses (see related information*) - all of which open up attractive career opportunities and lead to a lot of practical experience.
The sequential change of practice and theory phases deepens the acquired knowledge. At hochschule 21 we offer small class sizes, which allow an intensive learning environment.
Theoretical studies at hochschule21 and work experience within a company rotate in three month cycles. In order to study either of the engineering courses at hochschule 21 students have to sign an employment contract with a partner company.
