Our highly motivated academic staff enhances the appeal of the respective study programme with efficient learning methods and the commitment to ensuring individual support for each and every student.
East Frisia offers optimal conditions for an effective and affordable studying experience. Students can expect lower living expenses in the medium-sized cities of Emden and Leer compared to the likes of various metropolitan areas. The compact layout of the cities also offers short distances by bike from the city center to the university. All university facilities are located on one campus, while different sport activities, especially water sports, art, culture and a diverse pub scene provide various leisure time activities.
With its varied and up to date programme, Hochschule Emden/Leer positions itself primarily as a university of applied science in the region and for the region.
Bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering and natural sciences, nautical science, business administration, social work and health science aim to cover current and future needs for academics in the region.
Excellent teaching and study programmes with an international profile are seen here as essential elements in the education of young scientists for a globalised knowledge-based society.
Research, technology transfer and continuing education – particularly in our established areas of specialisation – serve among other aspects to provide stimuli for new businesses or new directions in existing business and society.
This focus of the university – a strong commitment to the region and at the same time an international orientation – matches the picture shown in an OECD study from 2007.
The profile of Hochschule Emden/Leer stems from the combination developed over recent years of areas of specialisation in teaching, research and technology transfer. Regional relevance, an international focus, study programmes with interdisciplinary features, and aspects of sustainability all contribute to a high degree in defining its profile.
Based on the broad scientific range of the four departments, excellent opportunities to combine study programmes and further interdisciplinary approaches are provided in both teaching and research. The university makes use of the chances arising from this; students in particular are placed in a position to solve complex interdisciplinary problems from engineering, business and society through teamwork.
Close cooperation between the departments and collaboration at the module level (e.g. in such courses as Industrial Business Systems, Social Management, Engineering/Marketing/Sales, Energy Efficiency, Maritime Technology and Shipping Management) already define the profile of the university; further expansion is planned.
Its exposed location at the coast and on the border was soon recognised by the university as a particular chance for its development in a European and international context. With its commitment to international matters, the university also wishes to emphasise its role as a stimulus for the region as a whole.
The university has numerous international contacts in teaching and research. Particularly noteworthy are joint teaching programmes with the Hanzehogeschool in Groningen and the Universities of Esbjerg and Leicester.
Some courses (e.g. Technical Management and Engineering Physics) are taught in English. In some cases a semester abroad is compulsory. The university intends to place further emphasis on the international aspect of its teaching.
Internationally recognised symposia and congresses provide further evidence of the importance of the university at both a European and an international level. All departments of the university are active here.
The university is especially committed to the concept of sustainability and social responsibility. Our interest in sustainability can also be seen in a regional context. Our proximity to the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site Wadden Sea and the region’s clear position regarding renewable energy play a particular role here.
The university’s commitment is reflected in specific courses e.g. the degree in Energy Efficiency, which was developed in close cooperation with regional industry, and in related research projects such as “Renewable Resources”. Further profile-defining elements are to be developed in this field.
Apart from the general areas of concentration described above, the university has a range of profile-defining areas of specialisation in teaching and research.
In addition to the standard courses, several courses are unique to our university, e.g. Energy Efficiency, Maritime Technology and Shipping Management, and Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Design. We are constantly reacting in a flexible manner to current needs, with particular emphasis on regional specialities. Further courses exclusive to our university are planned: IT Security and (inter-departmental) Engineering/Marketing/Sales.
Established areas of specialisation which are also recognised beyond our region are Industrial Informatics (Master’s in Industrial Informatics, coordination Research Network Industrial Informatics, core research area cluster, industrial fair Emder Automatisierungstage) and Life Sciences (Master’s in Applied Life Sciences, core research area Renewable Resources). Further profile-defining (core) areas of specialisation, e.g. in the fields of energy efficiency (research projects) and offshore (symposium Emder Offshore-Tage), as well as in the areas of interdisciplinary health promotion and rehabilitation, and child and youth welfare are to be expanded.
