At the Bundesbank"s University of Applied Sciences, students will find an unusual campus with excellent study conditions. Their studies and life centre around a baroque castle located in the middle of the historical little town of Hachenburg. Lecture rooms, the library and canteen are within walking distance, as are the fitness studio or cinema. Moreover, the Bundesbank and BaFin fully support their students throughout the course, including during the practical modules.
The fact that the students work and live together in the castle means that they very quickly form friendships and networks, which have been seen to last for decades.
Accommodation and meals are provided for all students during the theoretical studies at the university, including at weekends. The only time that the university does not offer any services is between Christmas and New Year, during the lecture-free period. However, the rooms can still be used during this period.
As a general rule, students are accommodated in double rooms during the foundation course and single rooms during the advanced course. Depending on how full the university is, some of the students in higher years might also be accommodated in modern single rooms in a student residence within walking distance. All rooms, whether located in the castle or the student residence, have modern furniture, desks and shelves as well as a bathroom. In addition to a TV connection and free internet connection, bedding and towels are provided and the latter changed when the rooms are cleaned each week. Moreover, washing machines and dryers as well as irons and ironing boards can be used free of charge.
The university"s kitchen provides full board, with the cook not only ensuring that fresh salads are always on offer but also that there is a vegetarian option. The students always help themselves to food at the buffet.
The costs of accommodation and meals are based on the legal provisions for civil servant pay. As studying civil servants, the students receive trainee civil servant pay (around €1,100). The costs of accommodation and meals during the theoretical studies are deducted from this figure each month. Full board and lodging costs €425.55 per month for a single room and €336.35 for a double room (figures for 2016). If students have their own flat, the relevant regulations on entitlement to reimbursement of travel costs and to family separation allowance apply. Students are given comprehensive information about this before commencing their studies during the "get acquainted days".
Furthermore, if parents, brothers or sisters, husbands, wives or partners want to visit and see for themselves what life at the castle is like, they can reserve a moderately priced room at the weekend (bed and breakfast), subject to availability.
The university’s governing bodies comprise the rectorate and the Senate. Further committees include the Council for practical studies and the students’ union.
In the Senate, representatives of full-time lecturers, the studies section and students decide on important issues relating to teaching and studies, eg the university’s constitution, while members of the Council for practical studies advise the university in all matters related to the practical side of the study programme.
In order to fulfil their personal and social needs, as well as to promote cultural and sporting interests, students can form a students’ union during their theoretical studies.
In addition to the very well-equipped library at the Central Office in Frankfurt am Main and the specialist libraries at the regional offices, the Deutsche Bundesbank has its own university library in Hachenburg. Students can request textbooks, journals and loose-leaf publications from any of the Deutsche Bundesbank’s specialist libraries at any stage during their theoretical and practical studies, in particular when writing their Bachelor’s thesis. Books or publications are delivered free of charge by internal post, generally on the next working day.
Our university library currently has more than 13,000 textbooks, 100 academic journals and over 50 loose-leaf publications.
Students can view the library’s collection, which is indexed with the help of key words, at any time and place (also during the periods of practical study) on-site or via the university’s pages on the Bank’s intranet.
Books may be borrowed free of charge during the library’s opening times between 8.00 and 16.30 (Tue-Wed 18.30). Outside these hours and at the weekends, students may enter the library together with a member of the security staff and borrow books, thus ensuring a 24-hour lending service.
In addition, the Bank’s intranet offers many more online possibilities, such as numerous online databases (WISO-Net, EconLit udgl.), various eJournals (electronic journals), a press article database updated on a daily basis with around 140,000 press articles, speeches, interviews and press releases, and many more databases.
Furthermore, our students make use of the long-standing cooperation with the town library in Hachenburg. This enables them to receive books via inter-library loans within Germany if a publication is not available in the Deutsche Bundesbank libraries.
