The University of Education is characterized by intensive research activities, including both fundamental and applied approaches, with particular fields of interests in empirical education and school research, as well as research in teaching methodology for individual school subjects. Research takes place in numerous co-operations with universities, schools, companies and other institutions inside and outside Germany. Research and teaching are closely related to each other. Students are often integrated into research projects.
We work closely with more than 40 partner universities worldwide to promote the international exchange of scholars, students and ideas. International exchange students and staff find very comfortable and welcoming surroundings where they quickly feel at home. The University of Education Schwäbisch Gmünd is a dynamic university with an especially long tradition in teacher training, namely since 1825. Formerly a teacher"s seminar, it now has university status with a broad range of courses, comprehensive research in many scientific projects with dissertations and post graduate work, as well as international networking in research and teaching. As a centre of educational competence in East Württemberg, the university is an important partner for the science and education community in the region, with around 300 staff in scientific and non-scientific services. In addition, it is an important employer in the area. Teacher training still represents the university"s principal pillar and is of central importance for the supply of teachers in the region. In the last decade in particular, the university has extended its teaching and research activities to include other fields of education and has strengthened its educational profile through the creation of new Bachelor and Master programmes.

As a modern higher education institution in the field of education studies, our research is focused on education processes in the contexts of kindergartens, schools, teaching and internal (further) training for teachers, and addresses the core areas of teaching research and media education, subject-specific teaching methodology, internal teacher training, language development, MINT promotion and education about Europe.
The field of health promotion and prevention is likewise strong in research and deals with the focus areas of "Promoting healthy lifestyles", "Health promotion in settings" and "Occupational health promotion".
In addition to the disciplines of health psychology and health sociology, the inter-sectoral research field of health also incorporates nutrition science and sports science.
Intercultural education, diversity, heterogeneity, welcome culture and social processes of integration are academic focus areas at our University.
