As the northernmost university in Germany, Europa-Universität Flensburg is a young university, having previously been called the "College of Education" (1946-1994) and with 5,000 students and 400 employees it is still one of the smaller universities in Germany. Its green campus on the Flensburg fjord, is located in direct proximity to the Kingdom of Denmark, in the heart of a maritime dominate...d region.
Subjects and courses offered at Europa-Universität Flensburg include humanities and theologies, art, textiles and music, educational sciences, teacher education, special education, mathematics, natural sciences, technology, general studies, health and nutrition, language, culture and media studies, European studies, sports science, economics and social sciences.
On June 30th, 2014 the University of Flensburg was officially proclaimed "Europa-Universität Flensburg". The title "European University" reflects both the specific location of the university in the German-Danish border region, as well as the University"s aspiration to train and educate a generation, which understands, -lives- and actively develops Europe.
In accordance with its expertise, the main focus in the area of teacher training is on educational sciences. This focus is unique for a Europa-Universität. It offers the chance to communicate European ideas directly to the new generation, who can then spread these ideas further.
Europa-Universität Flensburg is continuing to pursue a long-term international orientation, currently cooperating with more than 80 partner universities in 34 countries.
Academic research at the Europa-Universität Flensburg focuses on the areas of education, economics, environmental sciences/sustainable development and interdisciplinary European studies. In academic research the subject areas justice, sustainability and diversity are interconnected. Academic research and teaching are characterized by intercultural and international comparative perspectives, numerous inter- and transdisciplinary cooperations and a strong link between theory and practice. A special feature is the University’s close cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences Flensburg, which is based on the same campus, for instance in the areas of energy and environmental management, SME research and media sciences.

The University Board has overall responsibility for the quality of teaching, research, technology transfer, scientific training, gender mainstreaming, decision-making and administrative processes, as well as for the organizational structure of the University. The University Board applies the operational quality management for the whole of the University.
The University Board ensures the quality of its degree programs through accreditation for its courses and by requesting feedback from students. Internal and external evaluation ensures a regular assessment of the quality of teaching, research, scientific training and technology transfer. The University Board of Europa-Universität Flensburg is comprised of the President, the Vice President for Europe and International Affairs, the Vice President for Studies and Teaching, the Vice President for Research and the Chancellor.
The President chairs the University Board and has the authority to issue policies. The Vice Presidents are responsible for the areas of European and international affairs, studies and teaching, and research. The President nominates professors,who are then elected by the Senate for a term of three years.
The Chancellor is head of the University’s administration and reports to the President without prejudice to the functional competences of the other members of the University Board and their areas of responsibility. He also oversees the University"s budget.
The University Board is assisted by the Executive Office of the Board and the Senate. In addition, the University Board is supported by the Officers for European and International Affairs, Research and Press, and the Public. The President also has a Personal Assistant. The secretariat of the University Board is the first point of contact for all enquiries.
In order to maintain high standards of quality in study and teaching, the University Board is also assisted by the Quality Management Department.
Germany"s most northern university, with 5,000 student,s offers a very personal atmosphere. At Europa-Universität Flensburg we place particular emphasis on providing support and we value personal exchange with students and staff alike. At our University people know each other. Students are not just numbers lost in the crowd, but have names and faces who you will meet again and again. The University also sets great store by its international orientation, currently the International Centre cooperates with 80 partner universities in 32 countries around the globe.
Studying and research take place in the Auditorium, the main building (HG), the extension building (EB) and in the branch office, Munketoft. All lecture halls and seminar rooms are barrier-free and equipped with multimedia devices. In addition, WiFi is available throughout the campus and students are granted access to it when they first register at the university. Teaching material and work stations can be found in the Central Library.
Europa-Universität Flensburg and the University of Applied Sciences are direct neighbors and share the same cafeteria, library, sports centre and campus. The campus is one of the greenest in Germany. Between lectures, students can relax on the spacious lawns and sunbathe or walk around the small lakes. Students can seek refuge from the sometimes uncomfortable north German weather in the cafeteria, which is operated by the Studentenwerk Schleswig-Holstein or in the Campus Suite Café, where a great variety of coffees, baguettes, muffins and other snacks can be purchased. Also located on campus are a daycare center, a swimming pool and several residence halls for students. Students who do not live on campus can get to the campus by taking buses number 4 or 5. There are also parking spaces for bicycles and cars.
