Already a comprehensive university at its founding in 1457, the University of Freiburg still offers undergraduate and graduate studies as well as professorial qualification in all important disciplines today: the humanities, natural and engineering sciences, medicine, law, and theology. More than 24,000 students from over 100 nations are matriculated in 180 degree programs at 11 faculties. More than 7,000 professors and lecturers and many other employees put in their effort every day – and experience that family friendliness, equal opportunity, and environmental protection are more than just empty phrases here. Numerous former students as well as benefactors and sponsors intensify a culture of dynamic exchange with the city, the region, and the international scientific community. All of these groups work to give the University of Freiburg the vitality that will continue to provide fertile ground for outstanding achievements in the future. The University of Freiburg has received multiple State Teaching Awards, an honor given by the Ministry of Science, Research, and the Arts of Baden-Württemberg to promote instruction at the state’s higher education institutions. The award was conferred for the first time in 1993. Since this initial success, the University of Freiburg has won the award again and again. The University of Freiburg was among the winners of the nationwide “Excellent Teaching” competition in 2009. Organized by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs and the Stifterverband for German Science and Research, the competition recognizes innovative instructional concepts.
The Freiburg Academy of Continuing Education (FRAUW) coordinates continuing education programs for those already working a full-time job. These programs include certificate courses designed to provide further theoretical grounding for practical work experience and a selection of master programs which can also be taken as distance learning programs. Academically sound and at the same time practically oriented, these interdisciplinary continuing education programs can open up new horizons for your career or even provide the foundation for a change of professional emphasis. The University of Freiburg is one of Europe’s strongest research universities. Thanks to its broad spectrum of academic fields, the University of Freiburg has great potential for innovative fundamental research – both at the core of individual disciplines and in collaborative interdisciplinary research. Freiburg researchers maintain close contact with other researchers at all levels – both locally and worldwide – at other universities and research institutions, as well as with industry partners.
The University of Freiburg is part of a global network encompassing over 300 partnerships with prestigious higher education institutions on all five continents. In the 2015/16 winter semester more than 4000 international students from around 130 countries were matriculated at the university – more than ever before. In addition, the university has around 900 international employees from 80 countries in its academic, administrative, and technical staff.
