Research and teaching at the Universität zu Lübeck started in the field of medicine, but our computer science, natural sciences, and engineering faculties today encompass much more. The common element among them is their emphasis on life sciences, also mirrored by our motto, Im Focus das Leben (Focus on Life).
We offer degree programmes in medicine, computer science, molecular life scie...nce, computational life science, and medical engineering science. We initiated a master’s programme in biomedical engineering in collaboration with the University of Applied Sciences of Lübeck
The ubiquitous, intensive, interdisciplinary exchange at the university is the motor for superior, internationally outstanding, innovative and knowledge-oriented basic research marked by multifaceted applications. We strive to constantly raise the bar for the quality of our research and education and to master the challenges and opportunities of worldwide competition. We thus team-up with both national and international research institutions.
Our systematic and didactically well structured, multifaceted, research-based teaching forms the foundation of one of the best ranked universities in the German speaking world. The Centre for Development of Higher Education (CHE) ranked our faculty of medicine as the best, followed by the computer science and molecular life science faculties taking second place.
The Universität zu Lübeck is internationally distinguished for its research and the high quality of academic education.
Intensive transfer of knowledge and technology also distinguishes the Universität zu Lübeck. We ranked among the top five universities in Germany in the competition on Exchanges between Universities and Corporations. We work closely with regional and global businesses who specialise in this field, in order to optimise commercialisation of our research.
There is also a life outside of laboratories and auditoriums – enriched by our abundant cultural and sports activities.
Our university is intertwined in the many-sided cultural life of the city. We enrich this vibrant scene through our public lectures, colloquia, congresses, symposia, and concerts given by the university orchestra and choir. We play a decisive role in enhancing the reputation of Lübeck as the City of Science.
Lübeck is the outcome of an 800-year history. For a long time, this City at the Trave River was one of the key trading centres of Northern Europe. It is the home of two Nobel Laureates for Literature and one winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. The cultural scene in the city has been shaped permanently by the heritage of Thomas Mann, Günter Grass and Willy Brandt. Lübeck is situated between the metropolis of Hamburg, and the expansive flat sandy beaches of the Lübeck cove reaching out to the sea.
In 1973, the Universität zu Lübeck became an independent scientific institution in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. We offer degree programmes in medicine, computer science, engineering, and natural sciences. Interdisciplinary programmes encompassing natural sciences, computer science, and medicine offer practical and up-to-date education underpinned by the highest standard of healthcare. The conditions here for developing and applying innovative technologies, diagnostics, and treatments are ideal, as a result of teamwork among faculties, and collaboration with other institutions in Lübeck, the Research Center Borstel, the Medical Laser Centre, and local businesses. Teaming-up with national and international research institutes bolsters the quality of research at our university, currently defined by two special fields of research.
Compared with other universities, the Universität zu Lübeck is small, with just 3,400 students – but boasts a good teacher-student ratio. The high standings of our computer science and medicine students underscores the high standard of our teaching and education.
Is guaranteed its autonomy by the state. This calls for self-governance, performing outstanding research on an international scale, providing demanding education, fostering young academics, and ensuring properly qualified staff. We achieve these goals through interdisciplinary programmes involving the faculties of medicine, natural sciences, and computer science/engineering.
The degree programmes on computer science provide a broad basis and offers rich opportunities for specializations. A special feature of the Lübeck programmes is the compulsary field of application: bioinformatics, IT security and reliability, media informatics, or robotics & automation for bachelor and master, and additionally software systems engineering for master students only. They are an integral part of the curriculum in each term, starting in the very first term already.
Although the majority of the courses in the degree programmes are taught in German, there are a number of courses taught in English that are suitable for exchange students.
The Center for Doctoral Studies Lübeck (CDSL) is the central institution of doctorade for young researchers of Lübecks‘ University. We are the point of contact for prospective doctorate candidates, graduates and supervisors as well as connecting point of doctoral programs of the University. The CDSL is based on the 2007 founded graduate school „Computing in Medicine and Life Sciences“, which established within the Excellence Initiative of the federal and state government and its funding. The GSL provides a structured training for graduates of all Universities‘ disciplines.
