For over the last 2000 years India has been at work, experimenting and evolving its classical music. The rich mosaic of the various streams of Bani-s and Gharanas and the unlimited genius of great artists from the three faculties viz Vocal Music, Instrumental Music and Dance has been the pride of Indian Culture.
The Guru-Shishya Parampara (Teacher or Mentor and Disciple Tradition) of lear...ning has been a special contributing aspect of the evolution of music in India. Along with the other changes in social life, came the Institutionalisation of music education which was inevitable.
Institutionalised music education came into existence with the establishment of Gandharva Mahavidyalay in Lahor in May 1901 by Late Pt. V. D. Paluskar for the first time in India.
In 1926 Lucknow saw the birth of another Institution for Music education, namely Marris College of Music. Pt. V. N. Bhatkhande, with the help and encouragement from Rai Rajeshwar Bali, Rai Umannath Bali and Raja Nawab Ali saw his dream come true of establishing an Institution dedicated to music – the performing arts, which, (as per the Sanskrit definition of Sangeet. i.e.) Geet (Vocal), Vadya (Instruments) and Nritya (Dance) together make music.
The institute has carved a niche for herself in the world of music and music education. After a period of almost 34 years of functioning as a Government College, the Hindustani Sangeet Mahavidyalay (Nee Marris College of Music) was granted the status of a Deemed University by the Central Government. It is called Bhatkhande Music Institute Deemed University since October 2000.
This Institution, in the past 88 years, has been proud and privileged to have many top notch performing artists and knowledgeable theorists as the Principals and Gurus for the students coming from all over India and many parts of the world. The lists of the great performers who emerged from this institute also is long.
We, at the institute endeavour to impart a high standard of education in all faculties and our exams are conducted in the most strict ways.
Today the total strength of our students both boys and girls together as exceeded 1500. The alumnies of Bhatkhande Music Institute are immediately absorbed in jobs in various field of art and culture.
We make efforts to bring our students at par with the modern career avenues by arranging workshops on the subjects connected with the music industry and enable them to see the openings and get the fundamental ideas very clear about careers for their future.
For the last 3 years the convocation ceremony has had stalwart musicians as Chief Guests and they have blessed our students with their outstanding performances.
In cider to embolden the students we also arrange open-air performances within the campus on Saturdays where students are the organisers, performers and accompanying artists as well. By arranging the Guru Samman and Bhatkhande Jayanti Samaroh the Institute show cases the greated performers for the benefit our students.
To have a talent is not enough; it has to be nurtured with care, discipline and encouragement which is what we give to our students.
We teach them to appreciate the beauty and the effort that makes art divine. This inculcates respect for other arts and artists in their minds. Too much adulation can spoil the talented student but criticism in a positive way helps the child to remain grounded in spite of achievements.
The Library is equipped with modern facilities.It facilitates the research scholars ,students and music lovers to enhance their knowledge .The library has a wide range of collection of books in hindi,English, Marathi, Sanskrit, urdu, tamil ,Bengali and gujrati languages.
