The university established in 1974, has completed four decades of its existence as the pioneer institute of Agricultural Education, Research and Extension. The main objective of this Viswavidyalaya is to provide facilities for the study of Agriculture, Horticulture and Agricultural Engineering. It is also to conduct researches in these sciences and undertake the educational and extension progra...mmes in agriculture among the rural clientele base, keeping in view the requirements of the state.
College of Agriculture at GPS 23014’ N and 87051’E, Burdwan Sadar, an extended campus of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya has been established on July 9, 2014 by the Hon’ble Chief Minister Smt. Mamata Banerjee. Prior to this, two Agricultural Universities - Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (which was previously a Faculty of Agriculture under Kalyani University) established in the year 1974 and another Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya (which was previously an extended campus of BCKV) established in the year 2001 have been contributing momentously to the agricultural education system of West Bengal. Besides, one faculty at Sriniketan in the name of “Palli Siksha Bhavana” under Visva-Bharati (1967) and one Department of Agriculture (under Calcutta University) where only Master degree in Agriculture Discipline is being offered.
The University has three Students Union for three faculties, which run unitedly as a form of Central Students, Union. It deals with every relevant issues of the students starting from education, research, welfare to job oriented problems. As so, it is the common platform for manifestation of students voice, through out the year. Moreover, it fosters among the students love and loyalty to the University, increases the growth of closer social and cultural reaction between teachers and students and also fosters a spirit of cooperative activities among the students. So in tune with the Universitys ever increasing provision for quality education in diversified fields of Agriculture, the Union also has an ever increasing reputation of maintaining healthy educational and cultural environment along with creating and sustaining awareness of democratic value within the campus.
Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya-the premier agricultural university of the state welcomes the proposal from the Secretary, Department of Agriculture and Agricultural Marketing, Govt. of West Bengal to launch a pest surveillance scheme in the state from the ensuing Kharif season for the benefit of the farmers under RKVY project. Accordingly, a series of meetings were held between the University scientists and the officials of the State Government to bring out a schematic action plan of the above noted project for further refinement and financial support for effective functioning of the project. A project proposal was submitted by hand on 24.4.2012 to the Secretary, Department of Agriculture and Agricultural Marketing, Govt. of West Bengal. After series of discussions, it is now felt to submit revised proposal keeping in mind the actual financial and other situation. As such this revised proposal is being placed for its consideration and approval.
Pest surveillance project would cover systematic collection, collation, analysis and interpretation of data relating to pests and diseases and dissemination of relevant information to the farmers for corrective measures in order to mitigate the loss in farm production. Under the given financial situation the project will cover 50% of the Blocks of five districts viz. Nadia, Howrah, Hooghly, Burdwan and Bankura districts of South Bengal.
The BCKV Central Library is housed in a four-storied building in the Mohanpur campus. Being in the center of the campus, it is easily accessible from all faculty and departments of the university. It has a carpet area of about 81,000 sq ft.
The library also provides consultation facilities to outside scholars, teachers and students of other universities as well as ex-students of this university on the basis of the Library Rules.
