The Gandhigram Rural Institute (GRI), as a separate entity for rural higher education, was founded in 1956. The main goal of the university is to uplift rural students, rural people, rural villages with education, skill development, health and sanitation and by adopting the Gandhiji’s eighteen constructive principles.
The University has multi various faculties including science, arts, e...ngineering, agriculture, sanitation, rural development and information and technology through which the students are empowered with updated knowledge and skills. Through the research in innovative fields of science and through extension activities in rural villages, the university has been ranked in 32nd position in the top 60 deemed universities.
The Institute performs three major functions viz., teaching, research and extension. As the general advancement of rural India calls for an ever increasing range of skills and training, the Institute tuned its academic programmes focusing on rural development. The research works are leaning towards rural problems and the output has the potential to provoke policy and action. Extension is planned in terms of organic relationship of the institute’s educational programme and village conditions. The extension is the means of reconstructing the village society through knowledge creation and dissemination besides skill trainings.
The University from its inception has the distinction of adopting best practices including daily morning prayer, inter-religious prayer on Fridays, shramdhan on every fortnight, shanty sena (in place of NCC), gurukula system of teacher-student relations and the unique village placement programme as a part in the curriculum.
Gandhigram Rural Institute is quite active on both campus and rural areas in the vicinity, benefitting and enriching one another. Besides, its contribution to teaching, from diploma, degree and all the way to post-doctorate levels, the Institute applies the learnings from both scientific and social research to solve contemporary rural problems. The curriculum is a combination of theoretical, practical and extension experiments. The Institute has become home to many pioneering models of rural development programmes. The students and scholars who emerge from its portals tend to meet the personnel needs of rural development programmes under various governmental and non-governmental organizations.
The three dimensional approach of education namely teaching, research and extension has become a highly celebrated model, earning global and nationwide appreciation. Started in a small way the Institute has evolved into a reasonably large and expansive educational complex comprising of 8 schools, 12 departments and 16 Centres offering a whopping 126 academic programs, ranging from certificate courses, to Graduate programmes to Doctoral and post-Doctoral Programmes. At present the Institute has 3700 students, including Ph.D. Scholars, and 148 teaching and 154 non-teaching staff.
Thus the Institute has been taking efforts to design its academic programs in tune with the demands of the society and industry by providing a learner-centric, transparent teaching and evaluation methods. Through the action-oriented research and scientific research, the Institute contributes substantially to the research domains and concentrates on solving the rural issues at micro levels. The participatory and decentralized governance of Gandhigram Rural Institute strives for achieving global standard of excellence in all the dimensions of education without compromising on its rural character and Gandhian values.
