The Government of India, through the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), has established seven Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER). These institutes are located in Bhopal, Berhampur, Mohali, Pune, Kolkata, Thiruvanantapuram and Tirupati. The IISERs represent a unique initiative in India where teaching and education are totally integrated with state-of-the-art ...research nurturing both curiosity and creativity in an intellectually vibrant atmosphere of research. Each IISER is an autonomous institution awarding its own Masters and Doctoral degrees.
The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Pune is a premier institute dedicated to research and teaching in the basic sciences. It was Established in 2006 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. In 2012, it was declared as an Institute of National Importance by an Act of Parliament. As a unique initiative in science education in India, IISER aims to be a Science University of the highest caliber devoted to both teaching and research in a totally integrated manner, with state-of-the-art research and high quality education, thus nurturing both curiosity and creativity.
IISER Pune has initiated a 5 years Integrated Masters programme and a post-Masters PhD programme in Integrated Sciences in an intellectually vibrant atmosphere of research. Apart from classroom instruction, IISER builds student skills in areas such as scientific inquiry, problem solving, communication skills, computational sciences, electronics and instrumentation and workshop practices. IISER plans to develop advanced teaching and research labs where students will have the opportunity to pursue experiments as well as advanced research under the mentorship of world-class faculty. Eventually, this should make education and careers in basic sciences more exciting and rewarding.

The computing facility and IT infrastructure at IISER Pune caters to the requirements of all the faculty, students and staff. The institute has a robust data center comprising servers and high-end work stations for various system administration services. This is apart from the large number of PCs and workstations that serve personal computing requirements. IISER Pune has various high performance computing clusters ranging from 6-TeraFLOPs to 80-TeraFLOPs based on core infiniband low latency network. There are several storage devices available providing a total storage capacity of more than 500 TB for users. Further augmentation of the facility is in progress. The IISER Local Area Network consists of both the wired and wireless components and connects all computers in the institute including the mobile devices such as laptops. All computers in the institute have access to 100 Mbps internet connection. Most of the softwares required for scientific research and technical work have been procured by the institute, often with a campus wide license and most of them available over the IISER network. IISER also hosts two e-classrooms funded by Govt. of India and it is connected to the National Knowledge Network (NKN) through a 1 Gbps connectivity. The NKN connects many other institutions like most of the national laboratories, IITs, IIMs and other IISERs. This facility is used to run classes for students taking courses from different parts of the country.
Srinivasa Ramanujan Library of IISER Pune is a creative and innovative partner in teaching, learning and research activities to support institute"s vision to establish scientific institution of the highest caliber where teaching and education are totally integrated with state-of-the-art research.
The library has a rich collection of reference books, textbooks and research journals in electronic as well as in print formats in the field of basic sciences and allied subjects. Online full-text databases, abstracting and indexing databases and multimedia resources are also part of library’s collection. Circulation system of the library is completely automated with RFID based technology and biometric enabled user athentication. Continuous efforts are being put to apply ICT in all possible operations of the library to keep improving quality and efficiency its services.
