The establishment of NID was a result of several forces, both global and local. The late 1950s saw a confluence of these forces, and this time would be a significant one for Indian culture and education. This was a time of reappraisal and reconstruction in a newly independent India. A young nation was confronted with the mammoth task of nation building, of balancing age old traditions with mode...rn technology and ideas. The Modern Movement, the philosophy of Machine Aesthetics, and revolutionary experimentation in the arts, architecture and design were all taking place at the same time. There was a search for the Indian identity across all aspects of life.
Today the National Institute of Design is internationally acclaimed as one of the finest educational and research institutions for Industrial, Communication, Textile and IT Integrated (Experiential) Design. It is an autonomous institution under the aegis of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. NID has been declared ‘Institution of National Importance’ by the Act of Parliament, by virtue of the National Institute of Design Act 2014. It is also recognised by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation.
The broader objectives of education programmes at NID, both at Undergraduate and Postgraduate stream are listed here. The education programmes under each discipline are designed to meet these objectives so that students are able to progress through their courses in an integrated manner. The curriculum should generate the scope for opportunities to integrate experiential and explorative learning in order to understand and achieve a high degree of creative innovation and quality.
The objective, learning value and standard for each course are predetermined, but the context and relevance is repositioned by the faculty depending on the changing realities of the design profession and the level of professional competence achieved and demonstrated by the each group of students.
The mandate for NID is to offer world-class design education and to promote design awareness and application towards raising the quality of life by and through Education to create design professionals of excellence to help meet India"s diverse design needs. To train design trainers for other design and design-related institutions and positions in the 21st century as global leaders in Design Education and Research by recognising the changes in economic and business environment nationally and globally.
NID will also have to identify opportunities for newer linkages across institutional, national and cultural boundaries in order to create newer opportunities for the development of people and industry. As the external environment changes, NID must reshape existing programmes or initiate new programmes to maintain or gain leadership positions.
NID has taken five decades of pioneering hard work by the academic community at the institute to develop a system of education which lays more emphasis on learning than on mere instruction. Over a span of the last 50 years, the institution has made it a point to lay emphasis on learning and to pursue innovation led designs through the development of the mind and skills of designers. This technique has motivated students to perform better and has given them an edge over other design professionals. The institute"s client servicing team facilitates students in getting involved with real life projects, which in turn adds value to the upcoming professionals giving them a taste of actual situations.
Till now, NID was awarding only diplomas to its students, because of which they did face some difficulties while looking for jobs, applying for further studies abroad, or for research work. Now, with the latest recognition it has received from the central government, NID will be able to award degrees and PhDs to its students. Students and alumni of this institute have always been contributing to society through various design initiatives, and the status of Institute of National Importance will further bolster and invigorate their initiatives and help them contribute to overall national development. Indeed, this new recognition will certainly open up new opportunities for research and exploration for both students and faculty from NID.
NID was established in 1961, and recently, it celebrated its golden jubilee. For more than fifty years now, NID has been a witness to the socio-cultural, economic, and technological changes taking place within India and across the world in general. The passing of this Bill declaring NID as an Institute of National Importance is inspiration enough for the institute to renew its pledge for promoting multidisciplinary learning of design through its educational and training practices and research initiatives. NID will remain steadfast in its attempts to improve the quality of life and herald in renewed initiatives of co-creation.
