Ujjain, the capital of ancient Avanti Pradesh and one of the oldest and most renowned seats of learning has a rich academic and cultural heritage. The first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru wrote “Ujjain seems to me the ideal place for a great University and cultural centre to grow up, where our young men and women can pursue learning and develop themselves as good citizens o...f India.” The idea was translated into action and the Vikram University came into existence on March 1, 1957.
Vikram University has been basking in the majestic glory of the illustrious past of the ancient city of Ujjain. Ujjain is a city of God Mahakaleshwer. Ujjain holds the rare privilege of being a 3000 years old holy seat of learning of Lord Krishna. The Vikram Univeristy, Ujjain is one of the oldest University of Madhya Pradesh has created a special niche for itself in the past almost Six Decades. Pt. Nehru to APJ Abdul Kalam is an acedemic Visiter of Vikram University.
At present the university offers education in 11 faculties and 28 school of studies and institutes, NSS and NCC Training and Orientation Center and 171 affiliated college spread across Ujjain, Dewas, Shajapur, Ratlam, Agar, Mandsaur and Neemuch districts of Western Madhya Pradesh. Vikram University is offering instruction in higher learning and research guidance in around 125 diversified courses that are directly related to economic growth, development of science, society and human values.
The Central Library of University was established in the year 1962 to provide Library facilities to the College/University students, teachers, research scholars, public members etc. At present more than 1,82,000 books (52000 titles) are available in the Library. More than 25,000 on line journals are available to faculty and students. Scindia Oriental Research Institute, a unit of the Vikram University is an internationally renowned centre has a collection of more than 20,000 manuscripts including BHURJA PATRA and PALM-LEAF manuscripts.
