Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) is one of the best universities among 170 Muhammadiyah Universities (PTM) in Indonesia. In teaching and learning activities, UMS apply "Scientific and Islamic Discourse" that is able to cultivate an Islamic culture that controls science and skills based on Islamic values according to Muhammadiyah Manhaj. Established since 1981, UMS always maintain the quality of education to create competent graduates in accordance with the guidance of the era. Sticking to the noble ideals of educating the nation, UMS always improve its education system in order to compete in the global area.
Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta is actively developing cooperation towards foreign universities. Some universities who have worked with UMS are Kyung dong University (Korea), National Dong Hwa University (Taiwan), Youngsan University (Korea), Derby University (UK), Kingston University (UK), dan Charles Darwin University (Australia), Sheffield University (UK), Nottingham University (UK), Minnesota University (USA), Waterloo University (Canada), Curtin University of Technology (Australia).
Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta spread in two cities namely Surakarta and Sukoharjo. Being in a strategic location and city center, making UMS easy access from the city. With a total area of approximately 40 hectares, UMS provides 6.5 ha of educational forest (Edu Park) served as a beautiful public space.
Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta (UMS) is a university institution under Muhammadiyah organization, established October 24, 1981 as a change from IKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta. Initially UMS is a faculty of teacher and education sciences (FKIP) Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta branch of Surakarta founded in 1957. At that time it opened majoring in general education, general economics and religious education of Islam for undergraduate programs.
After obtaining the establishment permit in 1965, FKIP Muhammadiyah branch of Surakarta became two institutions of university, that is Institut Keguruan dan Pendidikan (IKIP) Muhammadiyah Surakarta and Institut Agama Islam Muhammadiyah (IAIM).
Two years later in 1967, IKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta added a civil law department. In the same year, IKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta was granted permission as a Muhammadiyah parent college in Central Java consisting of IKIP Muhammadiyah Klaten, Magelang, Kudus, Purwokerto, Kebumen, Wates, Temanggung, Wonogiri, Sukoharjo, Karanganyar, Banjarnegara, Prambanan, Purbalingga, Wonosari and Sragen.
In 1979, Drs. H. Mohamad Djazman Rector of IKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta initiated the establishment of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta by unifying IKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta with IAIM Surakarta. After two years, in 1981 IKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta renamed Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta. At that time, UMS manages several faculty such as faculty of teacher and education, faculty of economics, faculty of law, faculty of engineering, and faculty of Islamic science.and then according to the needs of the society, currently UMS has 12 Faculties and 54 study program consisting of undergraduate, master and doctoral programs.
Our Philosophy is ”Wacana Keilmuan dan Keislaman” which means to cultivate a personality that is master of science, technology, and art, to dedicate sincerely to Allah and to benefit others.
The vision of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta in 2029 became the center of education and development of the Islamic science and technology that gives direction for changes. Mission of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta carrying out two main missions, as follows:
  • Develop science, technology and art as part of worship to Allah (integrated) that gives impact to the realization of the main society.
  • Developing human resources based on Islamic values and giving direction to change in order to realize the main society.

Objective are:
  • Becoming an excellent university in science, technology and art.
  • Produce qualified graduates who practice Islamic values
  • Become a sustainable university with good governance.

Logo of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta was first used in 1981, after institution inaugurated. Based on the UMS Statute, there are three main components that become UMS logo that is, pentagon framed shaped petals, in it written Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, picture of rice and cotton and symbol of Muhammadiyah, with dark blue base color.
