The largest college in North Sulawesi was established since 1961, starting with just a few faculties, now a university known as Unsrat has grown to 11 faculties with 47 undergraduate, and 27 post-graduate programs consisting of Masters, Doctorate and Specialist levels. In total there are 74 courses, from undergraduate to doctorate/ specialists.
The total number of students is 24,801 comin...g from inside and outside the province of North Sulawesi. The presence of an international class has allowed the students also to learn from other countries through collaboration between universities. In order to provide the best educational services, we continue to encourage and open up opportunities for professors to improve their academic qualifications as high as possible. Currently the number of lecturers with doctorate qualifications has reached 40%, and those who have professional status (including professors) by 65%, and will continue to grow.
The system of quality assurance in education continues to be a priority , at a minimum national standards are met, while exceeding many potential character standards. The field of research and public services continue to improve in their quality of service with various measurable efforts. After the independence of Indonesia as achieved, the dreams of raising the quality of education and the tendency of people to achieve higher education began growing. In the 1950’s, higher education institutions of the region began to manifest themselves, answering the needs of each area.
The dream of establishing a college or state university in Manado, which at that time was viewed as the center of government and the activities for Central and North Sulawesi, is said to have been initiated by the University Pinaesaan, which was established on October 1, 1954 in Tondano. University Penaesaan had only has one Department at the time, Faculty of Law. Together with the University Permesta, founded on September 23, 1957 in Manado, the University of Pinaesaan was actually an early formation of the future development of The University of Sam Ratulangi.
Having two universities with private status did not to satisfy the needs/desires of the local citizens. Therefore, at the initiative of the people of Central and North Sulawesi (the local military, civilian, and scholarly leaders), came together with great determination to realize the establishment of a state run university in the area, which was expected to be the pride of the community in general and the people of Central and North Sulawesi in particular.
Vision Unsrat is a long-term vision and dynamic with the understanding that excellent has a quality relative to time and conditions, and flexible apply to national and international coverage area. Mission of the university is to leading the way in Developing the Tridharma of Higher Education and as the Center for Innovation of Science, Technology and Art-Culture to Improve the Quality and Quality of Community Life.
Furthermore, Mission Unsrat is grouped into 4 (four) points as follows:

• Improving the quality Tridharma sustainable manner for the purpose of improving the quality of programs of Education, Research, and Service to the community from planning, implementation / implementation, reporting, monitoring, and evaluation through measurable standards against input stage ( input ), process ( process ), results ( output ), and impact ( outcomes ).
• Developing Innovation in the Science, Technology and Art-Culture oriented Pacific Region , is intended to enhance competitiveness through the mastery and utilization of science and technological innovations that have relevance to the geographical position of the region where Unsrat is located.
• Improving the access and role of PT for improving the Quality of life of the Community , intended to increase access to study in universities, and equitable distribution of higher education, as well as increasing the role in the community economy through cooperation opportunitiesand partnerships for the improvement of the standard and quality of life of the community.
• Improving Higher Education Governance , is intended to organize Unsrat to institutions with an autonomous , accountable, effective and efficient PT governance systemin organizing institutional functions.
