Batanghari University since its inception in 1985 until now fostered by and shelter under Jambi Education Foundation. This foundation is a development of Jambi Education Foundation which was formerly build STKIP Jambi in 1970 - 1977. The purpose and objectives of Jambi Education Foundation is to assist the government in improving the education of the community by conducting educational efforts ...in a broad sense. To achieve the aims and objectives, the foundation conducts educational activities and equips the facilities and infrastructure needed gradually.
Founding Board of Foundation Jambi Education initially has 7 members, but 3 of them are no longer in this area because their main duty has moved out Jambi. It is therefore the idea of ​​all members of the Founding Body to formulate a provision that for members whose position is included as a founding member of the Foundation on the basis of Article 10 of the Articles of Establishment, but subsequently found to be unable to remain domiciled in the area where the foundation is located, it is categorized into member of the ex officio foundation . In relation to that matter, based on the decision of the meeting of the Founding Board members of the Jambi Education Foundation as implied in the Deed No. 1 dated April 6, 1985, the membership of the Founding Board was added so that the new members became 15 persons.
Recognizing the fact that the increasing demand for higher education can not be offset by the increased capacity of state universities, the Jambi Education Foundation feels challenged to transform STKIP Jambi into an embryo in realizing a private university in this area. The effort to realize the idea was initiated by Yayasan Pendidikan Jambi by forming a working team tasked with preparing the feasibility study and preparing the requirements required for the submission of operational permit to the Minister of Education and Culture through Kopertis Region II in Palembang. The established work team successfully performs the task of preparing the completeness of the material and the requirements of the permit application based on the provisions contained in the Letter of Intentdated June 6, 1985. The proposed private college is named Batanghari University, abbreviated with the acronym UNBARI.
Finally after preparing the registration of prospective students, preparing a schedule of lectures and recruit teachers, the inauguration of the establishment of Batanghari University on November 1, 1985 based on the Decision Letter of Jambi Education Foundation as well as Drs. Kemam Mohamad Saleh as the first rector.
