The establishment of Catholic University De La Salle Manado is a clear proof of Manado diocese"s concern for the monetary crisis that hit Indonesia in 1997. Bishop Manado, Mgr. Joseph Suwatan, as founder realized that the crisis that occurred in Indonesia can be overcome through the establishment of a qualified higher education institutions.
Therefore, the Bishop of Manado, in cooperation... with the Brothers De La Salle of the Philippines, founded the Catholic University De La Salle Manado. The main reason why the Brothers De La Salle were asked to establish this University was because the congregation established in Rheims, France in 1680 dedicated itself to the development of education. The motto of Catholic University De La Salle Manado is Religio (Faith), Mores (Moral), Cultura (Culture). Thus, Unika De La Salle has a strong commitment to educate people who fear God, have moral life, and respect the culture. The name "De La Salle" is the name of a saint of "Saint Johann Baptist De La Salle" who founded the Brother De La Salle congregation named Brothers of the Christian School (Fratres Scholarum Christianum , abbreviated as FSC).
Unika De La Salle Manado was established on August 7, 2000 by Decree of the Minister of Education No. 123 / D / O / 2000 for 5 (five) faculties: Engineering, Economics, Agriculture, Law and Mathematics with 10 courses. Faculty of Nursing opened in 2003 with operational permission from Depdiknas number 3002 / D / T / 2003. In 2009, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of Computer Science Study Program was merged into one with the Faculty of Engineering Informatics Engineering Program.
At the beginning of its establishment, Unika De La Salle Manado used a small campus in downtown Manado, namely Kanaka Campus having its address at Jalan Walanda Maramis no. 145, until September 2002. The lecture building on the Kanaka campus was formerly a cinema building owned by the diocese. In October 2002, Unika De La Salle Manado moved to a new campus located in the hills of Kombos with a total area of ​​15,000 m2. Kombos campus (or often known as Blue Campus) is located approximately 3 kilometers from Kanaka campus precisely located in Wenang Permai II, Kairagi I. The new campus was inaugurated on November 30, 2002 by Bishop Manado, Mgr. Josef Suwatan, and the Governor of North Sulawesi who served at the time, Drs. AJ Sondakh.
The first rector appointed by the De La Salle Catholic University Catholic University Foundation is Dr. Johanis Ohoitimur who served until the service in 2003. The second Rector is Dr. Johanis Montolalu who filial until 2006. Next third Rector appointed PTU De La Salle Foundation is Johanis Mangkey, MA. This third Rector was in charge from the moment of inauguration on 5 JULY 2006 to submit his position on 25 MARET 2008 as elected Provincial (Jesal) Provincial Leader of the Missionarii Sacratissimini Cordis Jesu (MSC) Indonesia which required the Mangkey priest to move to Jakarta. The pastoral period of Mangkey as Rector was followed by priest Revi RM Tanod, SS.SE, MA.

In the center of the star is an open book. The yellow color means the greatness of the dream that is aspired to. The green color behind the university symbol means a strong attitude of hope toward success without knowing how to despair. The blue color that intersects the star symbol means the attitude of fortitude that must be nurtured to achieve the ideals.
