To develop applied scientific research and consultation activities necessary for Lithuanian maritime sector, provide qualification improvement services. To spread the idea of Lithuania as a maritime state, to propagate marine occupations.
To create modern base for studies, corresponding to the international requirements, to develop new marine technologies; to train and educate citizens, being able to successfully act in various fields of public activities.
In 2001, Quality Management System comprising seafarers‘ training and professional development was introduced in Lithuanian Maritime Academy. It was repeatedly certified in 2014 by UAB „Lloyd`s Register Quality Assurance Lietuva" according to the requirements of ISO 9001:2008 standard. Lithuanian Maritime school was established on 28 April, 1948.
It was a closed-type paramilitary education institution. Students had to live at the school, to follow stringent regime, wear the uniform at school and outside its limits. During the first years the school did not have suitable classrooms. Navigators knew navigation devices just from books, and navigational tasks for determination of heading were solved by using the available charts of Gulf of Finland. In 1991 Klaipėda Maritime School was renamed Klaipėda Higher Maritime School. The school was reorganized to fulfill the needs of all Lithuanian fleet, not only the ones of fishing fleet.
On 12 October, 1991 Lithuania adhered to the requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers.
In 1996, the training base of the school was renewed and improved. After a short time, Lithuanian seafarers’ training base corresponded to the requirements of STCW 95 Convention. In 1998 it was renamed Klaipėda University Maritime Institute College.
In 2001 it was reorganized into Lithuanian Maritime College – institution of higher education for seafarers, the founder of which was the Government of the Republic of Lithuania.
In 2008 Lithuanian Maritime College celebrated its 60th anniversary and it was renamed into Lithuanian Maritime Academy.
The training basis is continuously renewed, electronic simulators for marine navigators and marine engineers are being installed.
Studies at Lithuanian Maritime Academy (LMA) provide an exceptional chance to become a professional in the maritime field.
After the graduation in Navigation and Marine Engineering fields, you will be granted an academic degree as well as a Certificate of Competence which is a unique opportunity in Lithuania.
The sudy programmes and courses are formed and conducted according to the requirements and quidelines of International Maritime Organization (IMO) and approved by Lithuanian Maritime Safety Administration, as well as registered at Register of Study and Training Programmes and Qualifications as well as accredited by Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education.
Studies are organized in modern classes and laboratories. Practical classes take place in newly installed or renewed simulators. Classes are held by experienced lecturers, ships‘ Masters, Chief Engineers, who pass their experience and knowledge on their students.
Practices are an integral part of the studies, and students accomplish introductory, training and professional activity practices (apprenticeships).
Graduates of maritime field who have the established seagoing experience are granted a Certificate of a marine rank together with a Professional Bachelor Diploma. Special courses that are required for granting a Certificate of Competency are included in the study programmes.
In cooperation with Naval Forces, Navy lieutenants’courses are organized at LMA. After graduation of the courses, the initial military service is counted for the graduates and they receive an opportunity to start a career of an officer in Lithuanian Armed Forces.
During studies, students have opportunities to study abroad for a limited period of time according to international exchange programmes in European universities and have their apprenticeships in foreign enterprises. Studies can be full-time and part-time.
The duration of full-time studies is 3–4 years. Part-time studies are less intensive, therefore their duration can be 1.5 times longer than full-time studies.
Part-time studies provide an exceptional opportunity to acquire higher education by combining professional activity and studies. Part-time studies are organized in fall and spring sessions of one month each, and for students of maritime professions the session is held once a year and lectures are delivered of both fall and spring semesters. With regard to students’ needs, the time for sessions for the next academic year is announced in May thus providing an opportunity to plan seagoing or study holidays in advance. In case it is necessary, students can study according to the individual plan. Students, who have coinciding schedules of sessions and work, have a possibility to prepare for the exams individually and account according to an individual schedule.
