The Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) is a comprehensive institution of higher learning in the Ilocos region, which was establish in 06 January 1978 by Presidential Decree (PD) 1279 and named after the father of former President Ferdinand E. Marcos. The decree merge two state colleges in the province of Ilocos Norte, the then Mariano Marcos Memorial College of Science and Technology (MMMCS...T) with campuses in Batac, Currimao, Paoay and Dingras, and the Northern Luzon State College (NLSC) in Laoag City. It also transferred the college departments of the Ilocos Norte College of Arts and Trades (INCAT) in Loag City and Ilocos Norte Agricultural College (INAC) in Pasuquin.
The university is relatively young compared to other state universities in the Philippines. However, MMSU’s root anchored deep, its foundation is strong, and its beginnings all proven historical turning points as far back as the early 1900’s.
To date, the university has ten academic units: Graduate School, College of Agriculture, Food and Sustainable Development, College of Aquatic Science and Applied Technology, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, Economics and Accountancy, College of Engineering, College of Health Sciences, College of Industrial Technology, College of Teacher Education and College of Law.
The OSSD shall have an integrated student services development program ready to serve the needs of the students in all MMSU campuses. This program shall provide a healthy atmosphere in the University for students to develop a well-rounded personality, so they may attain their goals for success in life. The Students Services and Development aims to enrich the student’s experiences and supplement the academic programs through educational, athletic, cultural, spiritual, civic and social activities.
Inaugurated on January 6, 1983. The University Main Library is strategically located at the heart of the Main Campus. It has a total space of 6,025 sq m, and it houses extensive collections of undergraduate and graduate information resources in various formats such as books, serials, and other printed materials as well as audiovisual and electronic media materials.The Main Library is also a repository of historic, ethnic, cultural, and art materials not only about the Ilocos and the Philippines in general, but also about other countries such as United States of America, United Kingdom, Israel, Japan, People"s Republic of China, and Taiwan.
The establishment of the University Library System (ULS) in 1980 has become one of the most significant achievements of the university"s development programs. Since then, the ULS continuous to serve as vital resource in the university. Guided by the "information access" and "multimedia" concepts, the ULS intends to deliver quality sevice to you in your use of the information needed in transforming abd improving your life. Thus, it is manned by professionally qualified and competent staff, maintains appropriate and extensive facilities as well as collects and organizes relevant information resources in various formats.
As of September 2014, the ULS has a total book collection of 42,241 titles and 66,988 volumes. Other library holdings include serials, theses / manuscripts, clipping / information files, brochures, pamphlets, art and museum materials, and audiovisual and electronic media materials (e.g., VCDs/DVDs, CD-ROMs/DVD-ROMs, audiobooks, e-books, online databases, and Internet resources). As a system, the libraries can share information and human resources as well as facilities with one another.
Despite the largeness of the Main Library, branch/unit libraries have also been established because the various colleges/units are geographically situated far from each other and have different types of population to cater to.While the Main Library lends most of the reading materials and some facilities, the reading centers are plain reading extensions maintained and operated by the units where these are located.
The Business Directorate includes Food Service, Accomodation and Agribusiness. Food Service includes operation of the cafeteria, satellite canteens and catering services. The Accomodation section includes operation of dormitories, rental housing, mansion and the hostel. Agribusiness includes meat processing and Iloko vinegar production, piggery, poultry (layers), rice and other dry season crops, pomology/vegetables and university share. there are long-term projects which include water refilling station, small ruminants, cattle, fishponds and floriculture.Rentals of properties like lands, fishponds, academic gowns, equipment and facilities of the University are likewise contributing to the income generation.In as much as academic and non-academic units are encouraged to participate in income-generation, projects undertaken by these units include uniform sewing, bookbinding, t-shirt printing and ink-refilling.
