Pedro Poveda was born in Linares, south of Spain on December 3, 1874 and wasordained a priest in 1897. He was always attentive to the needs of the poor and the marginalized. His apostolate among the gypsies of Guadix in Granada had a profound influence on the development of human society. By establishing the School of the Sacred Heart for Girls and Boys, conducting vocational training and Chris...tian formation for adults and living among the cavedwellers of Guadix, Pedro Poveda effectively evangelized and humanized these people.
Saint Pedro Poveda College accepts new students and transferees based on the results of the entrance examinations, personal interviews, academic records, and character evaluation.The number of applicants to be accepted depends on the available slots for the level applied for. Entrance test results are strictly confidential and will be filed for school consumption only. Students, who left Saint Pedro Poveda College for legitimate reasons and wish to re-enroll, are required to follow the admission guidelines for new applicants; and take the entrance examinations. They must not have been under academic/deportment probation prior to their leaving the school.

This is achieved through integral and quality academic programs for the formation, education, development and transformation in response to the demanding challenges facing the educational system//workplace of today and of the future.
The Academic Program of the Higher Education Department includes degree programs that offer a combination of core courses and electives that are sequentially designed to challenge each student to her/ his full potential.The TA/ POVEDAN SPIRITUALITY and SPIRITUAL FORMATION PROGRAM intends to deepen the Christian faith by growing in spiritual maturity and commitment to put Christ at the center of one"s life. This program is implemented in coordination with The Poveda Spirituality Center and the Christian Living Education (CLE) area. It includes Information Education and Communication (IEC) sessions on the Teresian Association: Origin, Charism, Mission; the lives and teachings of St. Pedro Poveda, Venerable Josefa Segovia, Blessed Victoria Diez, Servant of God Elisa Giambelluca and St. Teresa of Avila, among others. Annual retreats as well as Advent and Lenten recollections are also part of this program.
The PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM aims to provide the necessary training and competence -building in their respective areas of expertise towards efficient and effective performance of professional duties and responsibilities. Most of the professional training and seminars are outsourced. However, in-house trainings are also available. Lakbay-aral, cultural exposure and updating are likewise included in this program. This program is implemented in coordination with department/unit heads.
The PEP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM provides formation on Povedan pedagogy as explicitated in the philosophy and principles of the Personalized Education Pedagogy (PEP). Since PEP is a very special feature of the school, in-house sessions are conducted with the help of the PEP Team in collaboration with the Poveda Center for Educators Formation.
The HUMAN/PSYCHO-SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM seeks to increase one"s awareness and understanding of basic human and psycho-social dynamics of the self, the others, and the environment as they influence her/his development. Physical fitness/wellness and team building are important components of this program. Activities under this program are implemented in coordination with Human Resource Management Office, Guidance Center, Athletics Development and Management Office and Administrative Services Office.
In 1906, as Canon of the Basilica of Covadonga, he became deeply aware of the importance of education and the need for training and coordination of teachers. It was in 1911, before the image of Our Lady of Covadonga where Pedro Poveda received the inspiration to establish academies or educational centers which later on led to the foundation of the Teresian Association (Institución Teresiana).
To pursue his work, Pedro Poveda moved to Jaen and opened another academy for the formation of teachers. It was in Jaen where he met Josefa Segovia, a teacher-supervisor who became his most faithful collaborator and later, the first President of the Teresian Association. Together, they carried out the pioneering work and mission of lay people in the Church.Convinced that he could do much more if he was in touch with key people, Pedro Poveda moved to Madrid in 1921 where he served as one of the Royal chaplains. In Madrid, he also organized the Federation of Catholic Students and founded the Federation of Friends of Education. He likewise became counselor of the Catholic Association of Heads of Families. At the same time, he continued his work as founder of the Teresian Association which received Pontifical approval in 1924.
At the height of the religious persecution in Spain, Pedro Poveda died a martyr"s death at dawn of July 28, 1936. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II, along with Victoria Diez, on Oct. 10, 1993 in Rome and was canonized on May 4, 2003 on the occasion of the Pope"s pastoral visit to Madrid, Spain.
