Since its founding, PHINMA has been operating businesses in several industries all over the Philippines and turning these into leading manufacturers and service providers. Upon its establishment, PHINMA helped Bacnotan Cement Corporation (BCC), together with its subsidiary-sister plants, become the foremost producer of cement in the country in 1957 under the brand name Union Cement.
In 1971, PHINMA pursued the paper and packaging industry with United Pulp and Paper Company (UPPC), letting UPPC set an agreement with the Siam Cement Group, Thailand’s largest industrial conglomerate, to create the biggest and most advanced paper manufacturing facility in the Philippines.
Other companies that PHINMA has had joint ventures with are Trans-Asia Oil and Mineral Company for marine exploration, coal mining, and energy generation; Bacnotan Consolidated Industries Incorporated for GI sheets manufacturing; and Union Galvasteel Corporation for galvanizing.
In 1987, PHINMA Realty Corporation and FCI Development Corp merged, thereby forming PHINMA Property Holdings Corporation (PPHC). PPHC handles construction, property management, and sanitation. It is now one of the biggest developers of affordable housing. On the other hand, the PHINMA Group Development Foundation, a derivative of PPHC, built the Don Filemon C. Rodriguez Training Center in Tagaytay City.
PHINMA entered the banking sector by launching Asian Saving Bank to a commercial banking institution in 1989.PHINMA has always aimed to focus on the Filipinos. Filoil, PHINMA’s oil refinery in Cavite, had the marketing strategy “Filipino First,” stimulating a nationalistic sense of consumerism among Filipinos. COMREL, PHINMA’s Community Relations division, was created to reach out to the communities where PHINMA plants are located to coordinate with local government units in order to improve the livelihood of the Filipinos. COMREL, being one of PHINMA’s examples of good corporate citizenship and community building, received the Corporate Citizenship Excellence Award from the Philippine Business for Social Progress in 1996.
In 2004, PHINMA sold its paper and cement manufacturing businesses. It shifted to handling service and education sectors when it acquired Araullo University in Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija.
When it celebrated its golden anniversary in 2006 with the tagline “Life can be better,” PHINMA focused its mission on building the nation through competitive and well-managed business enterprises that will enable Filipinos to attain a better quality of life. The PHINMA Group’s entry into the education sector began when it acquired Araullo University in Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija in 2004. This formed PHINMA Education Network (PEN).
The acquisition of Araullo University was followed by that of Cagayan de Oro College in 2005; University of Pangasinan and University of Iloilo in 2009. This makes PEN a network that stretches to the various parts of the Philippines.In each of its schools, PEN makes changes when they are most needed. Each institution undergoes faculty improvement and course development. PEN provides scholarships for its employees for master’s and doctoral degrees, and improves salary and benefit schemes. Systems and curricula are drafted and refined in consideration of the students’ capacity to improve their academic performance.
