The University of Mindanao was established in 1946 and is one of the oldest universities in Southern Philippines. It is a non-sectarian school offering the most number of academic programs in this part of the country. It is located in Davao City. The University of Mindanao has 9 campuses and branches in Southern Mindanao. It has a total student population of 41, 962 (SY 2014-2015). It is the la...rgest private university in Mindanao and cited as one of the most number of PACUCOA accredited programs in the country today. UM is also the first academic institution in Mindanao with an institutional ISO 9001:2008 Certification. The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) granted an Autonomous Status to UM per CEB Res. No. 076-2009 and Category A (t) Status per CMO No. 09 s.2009.
The University of Mindanao acknowledges the vital role of research as a catalyst in the promotion of instruction and extension in higher education. As such, it focuses its strategic direction on the development of a strong research culture that would enable its faculty, staff and students to be engaged in research that is responsive to the local, regional and national development needs.
The Research and Publication Center (RPC) was established to manage and implement the research program of the University. It specifically identifies commitment to: operate on a relevant research agenda; develop skilled, committed, conscientious, and prudent researchers; upgrade research-support mechanisms such as facilities, devices, policies and systems; produce, present, publish and practice researches that respond to the needs of the time and contribute to the sustainable development of society; and establish and sustain strategic linkages with external agencies for purposes of collaboration and funding.
Admission to the University of Mindanao is a privilege. While the University is committed to democratizing access to quality education, it reserves the right to refuse admission to applicants or to require the withdrawal of students when it believes that their presence in the University is inimical to the interest of the entire student body and the realization of the objectives of the institution.
Once the student applicant is admitted to the University, he/she enters into a contractual relation with the University. He agrees to bind himself to a strict observance and compliance with all the policies, standard rules and regulations of the University, and the law. Failure to do so empowers the University to impose the corresponding sanction in accordance with the law and/or regulations of the school. Except in cases of academic delinquency, violation of school rules and regulations, or the closure of the school itself, a student who qualifies for enrollment is qualified to stay for the entire period in which he is expected to complete his course.

The University maintains a Guidance Services and Testing Center ready to meet the needs of every student. It is generally concerned about student welfare, helping and assisting students to actualize their potentials in order to become mature and responsible member of society. In addition, Guidance Counselors are designated in all colleges to make themselves available for consultation, conference and counseling and other needs of the students where they can be of help.The health services (Medical and Dental Clinic) is maintained to promote the health and well-being of the University Community. The Clinic is manned by full-time and part-time physicians, dentist and nurses.Students may avail of free consultations, first aid, and initial dosage of medication for common ailments. The Learning and Information Center (LIC) is a place in the university that provides access to information in many formats and in many sources such as books, theses and dissertations, periodicals, multimedia materials, electronic resources and online databases. The department facilitates the enrollment of the University of Mindanao and handles the computerized system of all departments including the operations of the Internet and Computer Laboratory Centers.
