Founded in 1911, the University of Porto (U.Porto) is a benchmark institution for Higher Education and Scientific Research in Portugal and one of the top 200 European Universities according to the most relevant international ranking systems.

The University of Porto rose to seventh place of the best Ibero-American (Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Peninsula) Universities list, according to the SCImago Ibero-American Institutions Ranking 2015. Published by the SCImago Group, using the Scopus database as source, this ranking is the result of a comparative analysis of the universities scientific activity between 2009 and 2013, according to bibliometric indicators such as the number of publications, the impact factor quality, specialization index, scientific leadership and excellence of publications.
The University of Porto raised three spots from last year ranking and was the only one in the top 10 list that moved up in the classification. To this performance contributed the 17,783 scientific articles published by the University between 2009 and 2013 – 2,000 more than the previous studied period (2008-2012). Besides the amount of publications, the University also registers a 1.16 in the impact factor (citations per publication), meaning its articles are cited about 16% above the world average.
The University of Porto offers the community specialised services based on its knowledge areas, through schools and research centres, or through facilities created for the purpose. You can take a pet to the veterinary clinic at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar (ICBAS); you can have dental care provided by the students at the Faculty of Dental Medicine (FMDUP); you can check the authenticity of a manuscript signature with the help of biology experts from the Faculty of Sciences (FCUP), and you can benefit from some of the world’s most advanced methods for cancer diagnosis at IPATIMUP. Apart from services rendered by the schools and research centres, the University of Porto also has several multidisciplinary structures which provide answers to specific problems posed by the community.
