University is an institution which is rightly considered one of the greatest contributions of the peoples of Europe to the world"s cultural heritage. The University of Belgrade is a state university. Its main activities in the fields of higher education and scientific research are activities of public interest, and they are carried out in accordance with the legal regulations. The University of... Belgrade celebrates September 13 as its day. This is the date when lessons started at the first Higher School, founded by Dositej Obradovic.
During the two centuries of its existence the University of Belgrade has served its people, and its former students and teachers have greatly contributed to the development of cultural, scientific, educational, political and economic life of our country. The University of Belgrade is prepared to maintain and enhance its position as the leading institution of higher education in the region by adapting to the challenges of modern times on one hand, and preserving what"s worth in its tradition on the other. This is precisely what makes it recognized as a true national brand.
The mission of the University of Belgrade is to provide superior education and exceptional knowledge to its students, not only in terms of their intellectual growth and development, but also in terms of growth and development of their human qualities and ethical values, and inspiring their wish and inclination to be leaders; moving the boundaries of knowledge and higher education, promoting intellectual surroundings which cherishes and honors true values, respect and accepting people’s differences and devotion to knowledge, development and human values. Devoted to studying, education, progress and prosperity, the University of Belgrade strives to set the strongest standards in higher education, to cherish and encourage intellectual and personal growth and to stimulate meaningful work and effort which serve to the well-being of the entire society. In scope of their activities, higher education institutions within the University of Belgrade have the right and obligation to use the name, Coat of Arms and the flag of the University, as well as to incorporate them into their own symbols, either in part or in entirety. The University of Belgrade celebrates September 13th as its anniversary, in remembrance of the day when lectures started at the College in Belgrade in 1808.
The following types and levels of studies are realized at the University of Belgrade: undergraduate academic studies, undergraduate professional studies, graduate academic studies, specialized academic studies, specialized professional studies, doctoral academic studies and multidisciplinary studies Studies conducted at the faculties of the University are adapted to the principles of the Bologna Declaration. Teachers and associates of the University of Belgrade make the largest part of the entire scientific potential of Serbia. Apart from their research projects whose immediate objective is to improve the system of education and modernize educational process, the University staff implements a considerable number of projects from the republic Programme of Scientific Research and the Programme of Technological Development.
Current academic activities at the University of Belgrade, particularly those related to science, technology and research, take place within an internationalized context. The University of Belgrade engages in considerable activity at the international scene regarding teaching, research and faculty / students exchange, i.e. taking part in the international mobility programmes for faculty / students in the European Higher Education Area. However, the University should invest further effort toward internationalization with the prospective of becoming more visible and competitive at the international academic stage. Our goal, thus, must be to achieve as high level of internationalization as possible in all areas of work at the University of Belgrade.
The University of Belgrade has aimed at establishing, nurturing and developing cooperation with other universities, both in the country and abroad, as well as other international organizations that are engaged in the higher education field. What so clearly supports this aim are the signed bilateral agreements of cooperation with a number of foreign universities on almost every continent, the membership in the European Universities Association (EUA), the Balkan Universities Network, the Danube Rectors" Conference (DRC), the Network of Universities and Research Centers of the Adriatic-Ionian Region (UNIADRION), the Agency of the Francophonic Universities (AUF), DAAD, the Educational Committee of the Council of Europe, UNESCO and other organizations that contribute to the development of education, science and culture.
The University maintains bilateral connections with a number of foreign university associations, supports the participation in the Tempus and the CEEPUS Programs and various international competitions for awarding funds for scientific research and the development of the educational process and the acquisition of material resources for the advancement of higher education teaching process. Furthermore, the University makes regular contacts and cooperates with trade associations as well as student exchange associations, for the purpose of performing study and summer practice programs (e.g. IASTE). The University of Belgrade takes part in educational fairs.
