University West in Trollhättan is a modern university which offers education collaborating with work-life in an attractive and modern study environment. We focus on the student and learning. There are about 11 000 students at University West and about 600 employees. Our campus is centrally located in Trollhättan and is built with the students" needs in focus. The open surfaces make it simple ...for students, teachers and work-life to coexist. The university offers study programmes, second cycle programmes and a variety of courses in computing and IT, economy and leadership, health and care, teaching and languages, media, the individual and society as well as technology. We have programmes in which we collaborate and cooperate closely with work-life, businesses and society. Through our profile - work integrated learning, WIL - students at the university gain work experience already while studying. University West has been commissioned by the government to develop pedagogics connected to WIL. One example of WIL is the so called Co-op in which studies are sandwiched with periods of paid work.
Research is conducted within the areas of technology, social science, health and caring sciences and the humanities. Work integrated learning constitutes an important, interdisciplinary, field of research. There is a strong connection between the research conducted at University West and the undergraduate education. The research concerning production processes in manufacturing industry is of special importance. This research is conducted in close collaboration with a variety of businesses. University West is authorized to award degrees at the doctoral level in the field of Production processes and Work Integrated Learning.

The university’s core activities are education and research. The university’s central concept and brand promise is to create knowledge through collaboration, and therefore collaboration is a central strategy for achieving high-quality education and research. Collaboration means mutual collaboration with partners in the surrounding community, public sector, and trade and industry. This requires both a high level of academic expertise and a humble attitude as regards the knowledge and perspective of other parties. Collaboration is to be linked to both research and education and take place primarily within the framework of Work Integrated Learning. In a globalized society where complex problems require multidisciplinary collaboration, it is natural and essential that University West’s teachers and researchers collaborate with colleagues in the academic community in Sweden, abroad and across disciplines.
University West is to have a wide range of study programmes and courses which facilitate lifelong learning through different types of educational models. To achieve high quality and relevance, education at University West shall be closely linked to students’ future working life and role in society. During their studies, students shall come in contact with working life in a number of ways. A high proportion of the university’s doctoral students shall have direct links to working life. Education at University West is always to be linked to research. The way in which knowledge is created through collaboration and the way that study programmes and courses are progressively linked to research shall be explicitly expressed through the pedagogical methods used. The students’ acquisition of knowledge shall be the main focus and students shall be familiar with the implications of academic learning and how academic knowledge is applied. The university’s learning environment shall be characterized by diversity. Students and teachers from different backgrounds and nationalities shall come together to jointly contribute to and take responsibility for their own and others’ learning and to participate in the development of academic knowledge. The university’s Work Integrated Learning profile also means it can be a driving force and centre for lifelong learning.
The work at University West is characterized by high quality. There is an ongoing systematic work with quality at the university aiming to continually revise all aspects of work conducted at the university and create suitable routines. The quality improvement work rests on the university"s main commission: to provide education on undergraduate as well as post-graduate level, to conduct research and provide research programmes of high quality and collaborate with the surrounding community. Quality improvement work includes many dimensions and is a continuous process. The focus of the quality improvement work at University West is on the area of educational quality; how frames and conditions for how our main process, the student"s path through university and studies, can be quality assured. The staff"s skill and knowledge is a key factor here, together with the ability of the educational organization and support functions to facilitate the main process. The programmes at University West are evaluated by Standards and Guidelines for Quuality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area, ESG. The Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) evaluates the quality of higher education and research and monitors compliance with laws and regulations among all universities in Sweden.
