National Dong Hwa University is a research-based, teaching-oriented institution with great promise and potential in many areas. Through the steady addition of new academic programs over the next decade, National Dong Hwa University will eventually consist of the following nine colleges in humanities, natural sciences, engineering, management, social sciences, indigenous Studies, environmental s...tudies, marine sciences, and fine and applied arts. Moreover, the University will house a wide range of interdisciplinary research centers ultimately catering to a student body of over ten thousand. We are fully convinced that National Dong Hwa University will attain its ultimate goal of becoming one of the finest institutes of higher learning in Taiwan - if not all of Asia and the rest of the world - in the years to come.
On August 1, 2008, National Dong Hwa University integrated with the then National Hualien University of Education marking a new milestone for the University. The synergy effect of integration expanded National Dong Hwa University’s academic disciplines and strengthened its research. Regarding the history of the University, it could be traced from the two campuses in Shoufeng and Meilun.
National Dong Hwa University was founded in July 1994 with the planning stage started three years earlier. In October 1991, the National Dong Hwa University Planning Office was established in Shoufeng, Hualien, by the Ministry of Education as part of its mission to foster the balanced regional development of Taiwan through the even distribution of higher education systems in the north, south, east and west of the island. Professor Paul Tzung - Tsan Mu was appointed to head the Office and led the development of plans for eastern Taiwan"s first comprehensive university.
National Dong Hwa University (NDHU) recognizes the importance of academic exchange and collaboration. To this end, the University actively seeks opportunities of exchange and cooperation with higher educational and research institutes worldwide. Currently, NDHU has developed academic links with over 40 universities and research institutes domestically and internationally. The University also has reciprocal student exchange programs.
National Dong Hwa University currently consists of eight colleges: the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the College of Science and Engineering, the College of Management, the College of Indigenous Studies, the Hua-Shih College of Education, the College of Fine Arts, the College of Environmental Studies, and the College of Marine Sciences. In all, there are a total of 35 academic departments, 48 graduate institutes, and 17 Ph.D. programs. Totaling over 10,000 students, out of which about 3,800 are graduate students. Students are admitted to the University only after undergoing a rigorous screening process, which includes the College Entrance Examination and other equally stringent methods of evaluation. The student body comprises students from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds from all over Taiwan and various foreign countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, India, and Myanmar. At present, the University boasts over 500 scholars who dedicate themselves to teaching and research; more than ninety-eight percent of these full-time faculty members hold Ph.D. degrees from the world"s most prestigious universities.
