Through active collaboration with the economic and business sector along with partnerships for community development the University endeavors to contribute toward the socio-cultural transition into a knowledge-based society.
The University of Rijeka, from its beginnings until today, truly believes that establishing “a knowledge-based” society is the only way towards long-term successful development of society as a whole.
Striving towards that aim, the University attempts to realize its mission as successfully as possible, especially its three fundamental tasks: the educational task, followed by the scientific and research one, and rounded up by the social task.
All the while being fully aware that the realization of these tasks is no mean feat and that it requires long-term perseverance and work from all teachers, staff, associates and above all, the students and their families.
In addition, it is highly aware that success in all three fields requires entwinement of all segments of society: the business sector, the local government and self-government, other educational, scientific and research institutions, and particularly with all citizens who are willing to help out in any way, shape or form in the development of a “knowledge-based society.”
The aim of all study programmes at the University of Rijeka is to provide students with sufficient theoretical and practical knowledge so they can successfully proceed to become a part of either the corporate or academic world upon completing any given study programme.
One becomes a student at the University of Rijeka by enrolling in any given Faculty or University Department.
A student can enrol either as a full-time or part-time student.
Full-time students are those who study according to a programme based on a full-time schedule and class attendance is mandatory as are all class activities. The tuition for a full-time study programme is partly or completely subsidized by the state budget, dependent on the student’s entry exam score and their subsequent grades and achievements throughout the semesters of the study programme.
Part-time students are those attending the academic programme part-time (holding down either a job or other activity that demands a specific programme). Part-time students can be freed from certain class obligations, pursuant to the study programme. The tuition for the part-time study programme is met completely by the students themselves. The conditions of payment are regulated by the University of Rijeka Senate.
A key role of the higher education system and the research & innovation in the development of economy becomes more and more recognizable. Due to that, long-term higher education policy should reach two goals:
  1. Strengthen the system of higher education and research, its efficiency and correlation of the teaching and research components.
  2. Strengthen the correlation between the system and the community, especially in those segments which form a knowledge-based society.

Its vision targets the inclusion of the University of Rijeka within the top 500 European Universities, thus it has committed itself to dynamic development which systematically facilitates mobility and the development of research careers while providing each individual with an opportunity to express their talents and entrepreneurial energy.
The University of Rijeka’s collaborations with foreign universities, scientific institutions, international agencies and associations for aiding research development is of great importance for realizing the University’s fundamental development goals.
The University’s openness towards society and the world is a prerequisite of its development. Openness and exchange of teachers, scientists and students of the University of Rijeka with foreign institutions grants access to comparability along with a critical evaluation of one’s own goals and realizations as well as taking into consideration global principles of evaluating research and university-level teaching.
This paves the way for successful participation in bilateral and multilateral research programmes, exchange programmes of teachers, students and young researchers while at the same time ensuring specialization and training grants and scholarships. And last but not least, the University’s fundamental objectives are being met through these activities.
Thus the University encourages international collaborations in all ways, shapes and forms. It especially strives to create conditions for the advancement of international collaboration particularly in those areas where international relations were non-existent until now.The University of Rijeka will organize Lifelong Learning Programmes and establish institutional structure for their implementation.
Lifelong Learning Programmes will be open to persons of all ages, particularly third age people (“University of the Third Age”), so as to enable continuous education and personal development of every individual.
Lifelong Learning Programmes will undergo accreditation procedures and will be subjected to the same quality standards as University study programmes. This will enable accumulation of credits through Lifelong Learning Programmes and their use for build-up and development of an academic and qualifications profile.
The University of Rijeka will establish institutional structure for accreditation of previous non-formal and informal learning. Lifelong Learning Programmes will be an integral part of regular activities of University employees.
Activities of the Lifelong Learning Office:
  • Administrating the university Lifelong Learning Programme evaluation system.
  • Developing an accreditation system for previous learning.
  • Establishing and developing collaboration with public and private partners.
  • Facilitating and promoting lifelong learning at the University.
