The University of Zagreb is the oldest and biggest university in South-Eastern Europe. As a comprehensive public Central European university, University of Zagreb offers education and research and in all scientific fields (arts, biomedicine, biotechnology, engineering, humanities, natural sciences and social sciences) and a broad spectrum of courses at all study levels, from undergraduate to po...stgraduate. With 29 Faculties, 3 Art Academies and the University Centre for Croatian Studies it is the flagship educational institution in the country, a place where more than 7900 teachers and 72480 students develop knowledge and acquire skills.
The University excels not only in teaching, but also in research, contributing with over 50 percent to the annual research output in Croatia and 80 percent of scientific productivity of all Croatian universities. The central strategic issue of the future development of the University of Zagreb is for it to be a research oriented institution with teaching of high quality. Accordingly, the focus will be on master and doctoral programs, encompassing all fields of science and art, boosting trans diciplinarity and inter disciplinarity as well as translational research, nurturing the culture of innovation and transfer of knowledge. This should result in better inter sectorial harmonization on local and regional levels.
University of Zagreb is in the process of building a new Campus “Borongaj” which is the biggest investment in Croatian education in the last 150 years, and when it is built (finished) it will be used by more than 20 000 students. The Campus was officially opened on October 12th 2007 and for now it hosts 4 university units. Centre for Croatian Studies, Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation, Faculty of Traffic Engineering and Faculty of Economics and Business (only vocational study programmes in economics and business). Five other faculties are also planning to relocate to the Campus in the next few years. Besides the (re)construction of university buildings, Campus will be a home to a sports centre, student residence hall and a number of institutes.

Student services consist of different information and advice centres /offices for issues concerning studies and student life at the University of Zagreb. Services include the International Relations Office, University Computing Centre, Office for students with disabilities and many more. They are dispersed all around the University, and some faculties have their own services.
Exchange students are students participating in a formal exchange programme between their home university and the University of Zagreb (i.e. Erasmus, Bilateral agreements, CEEPUS, Erasmus Mundus etc.). Exchange students participating in a formal exchange programme are exempted from paying tuition fees.
University undergraduate programmes – first cycle (preddiplomski sveučilišni studij) normally take three years in which students are required to earn 180 ECTS credits. A minority of undergraduate university programmes in Croatia are offered as four-year programmes in which students are required to earn 240 ECTS credits. Upon completion students are awarded a diploma (svjedodžba) and the academic degree of University Bachelor (sveučilišni prvostupnik) with an indication of the field of study. Students graduating in technical sciences receive the academic degree of University Bachelor in Engineering (sveučilišni prvostupnik inženjer) with an indication of the field of study.Students holding a first cycle university degree can apply for admission to university graduate programmes or vocational specialist graduate programmes, or enter the workforce.
University graduate programmes – second cycle (diplomski sveučilišni studij) normally take two years in which students are required to earn 120 ECTS credits. A minority of graduate programmes in Croatia are offered as one-year programmes in which students are required to earn 60 ECTS credits. The total number of credits earned in the first and second cycle programmes must be at least 300. Upon completion students are awarded a diploma and the academic degree of Master of (magistar struke) with an indication of the field of study. Students graduating in technical sciences receive the academic degree of Master in Engineering (magistar inženjer) with an indication of the field of study.Students holding a second cycle university degree can continue their studies in university postgraduate programmes or enter the workforce.
University postgraduate programmes – third cycle (poslijediplomski sveučilišni studij) normally take three years. Upon completion students are awarded a diploma and the academic degree of Doctor of Philosophy (or Doctor scientarum), or Doctor of Fine Art (doktor znanosti or doktor umjetnosti), with an indication of the academic field or art form.
University specialist postgraduate programmes (poslijediplomski sveučilišni specijalistički studij) normally take one to two years. Upon completion students receive a diploma and the academic degree of University Specialist (sveučilišni specijalist) with an indication of the field of study.
E-learning at the University of Zagreb has been in use from nineties mostly by individual activities of some teachers or as the technological possibility on few schools but these initiatives didn’t result in systematic and sustainable use of e-learning. By adoption of E-learning Strategy in 2007, the process of systematic implementation of e-learning was started. Following E-learning Strategy stipulations, the University Office for E-learning, E-learning Centre and University Committee for E-learning were established.
