ITECH comes from the fusion in 1988 of ESITL and EFT, 2 higher level education establishments created from the initiative of industrials.
ESITL (The School of Textile Industries of Lyon), was founded in 1840, materializing the great tradition of Lyon silk manufacturing.
EFT (The French School of Tannery), created in 1899 was a branch of the Industrial Chemistry Institute of the Univ...ersity of Lyon in the fields of Leather and Plastic Manufacturing (with the CNAM) before acquiring the department of Paints, Inkks and Adhesives in 1969, and becoming in 1983 the ESCPEA, The School of Leather, Paints, Inks and Adhesives.
The absorption of ESITL in 1988 gave rise to ITECH and brought about the creation of the department of Textiles.
Having kept the professional expertise of its two founding institutions, ITECH has successfully been able to make the most in associating its teaching and strong partnerships with industry that it has maintained over the years. One of its assets is an ever-evolving education, of which the curriculums systematically integrate new tools and technological developments.
Nowadays, ITECH is the European School of Paints, the World School of Leather (recruitment of post-graduate leather engineers from the biggest international firms as well as SMEs) and the School known and recognized for its applications in chemistry (paint, inks, adhesives and cosmetics) and textile techniques.
Students have on many occasions been rewarded through competitions: Campus Création, prix UGEI, prix Rotay, prix CNRS (Colloque FGL)… and through the diversity which is characteristic of the school: teachers coming from academia and the industry, over 50% of pupils are women, over 30% with government loans per year.
On top of its main 3 year engineering training, ITECH Lyon proposes other ones for students coming from varying from 2nd to 6th year of University studies.
ITECH Lyon develops its international presence and its exchanges with the rest of world (from the USA to China via Europe).
If education is the first vocation of ITECH Lyon, its relations with industrials is one of its strong points. These translate through strong partnerships in the fields of research and development.
ITECH Lyon and its subsidiary, ITECH Entreprises, make use of their expertise and technical means to the benefit of companies through different sub-contracting forms.
These services are carried out in the form of annual or multiannual research linked with the University, industrial studies, analyses, trials, advice, renting of material with personnel (permanent teacher-researchers) and professional vocational training.
Admission is done through the study of the student’s file records of results obtained in the last 2 years of Secondary School (1ère and Terminale), from recommendations of last year professors and of the Head of the School.
Formulation Chemistry allows for the creation of complex combinations of polymer solutions in order to create adhesives, inks, paints, cosmetics and other formulated products. This field finds its applications in the heart of everyday life. The job opportunities of chemical engineer n formulation are vast: in upstream production with raw material and chemical product companies, within the conception-manufacturing units, and in down-stream industries using the products (transport, packaging).
ITECH distinguishes itself from other chemistry schools through its engineers’ mastering of creating materials in manufacturing facilities and in conceiving parts, on top of his or her knowledge of plastic materials. The ITECH plastic manufacturing engineer develops his or her skills with those of his or her companions of the other specialties: formulation chemistry with the coating of materials with colors; associations with textiles creating composites used in the leisure field. From health and safety to the aeronautical industry via the packaging, automotive and sporting industries, a large number of sectors make use of plastic engineering, working as much with suppliers of raw materials, as with “formulators” and plastic materials users.
The training offered at ITECH is fully adapted to the needs of the textile sector. It’s based on the chain supply functioning for all jobs linked to textiles (textile material chemistry, spinning, milling and texturisation, weaving, knitting, non-woven dyeing, printing and finishing) and for all other applications (clothing, furnishing, technical textiles).
The skills are developed through teaching in close collaboration with companies located in the technological hub of Roanne.
ITECH is the only institute in the world delivering engineering degrees in Leather Manufacturing, for tanneries and taweries and their uses (shoes and leather goods). The ITECH Leather Engineer’s craft revolves around transforming the raw skin into leather, bringing to it the essential part of its added value. Lab and practical work dominate the program and there are numerous qualities that are required: observation, feel, the “look”, sense of practicality, rigorous, sense of aesthetic. He or she works in large chemical firms, in tanneries, taweries, in user (leather goods and shoes manufacturers…). The leather market extends worldwide and requires extreme mobility, multitasking and adaptability.
Students prepare a Masters in Research during their 3rd and final Year. This Masters entitled “Materials – Polymer Materials” is part of the ITECH training program and thus is an optional specific “research” module of this 3rd Year.
The ITECH engineering degree has by right the Masters level grade. This allows students to pursue their studies with a a PhD without necessarily doing a Masters in Reasearch in another institution.
ITECH is part of the Doctoral School of Polymers of Lyon and can welcome Masters of research students in its laboratories.
