The University of Burgundy (uB) sinks its roots deep into the history of France. The origins of uB go back to the times of the French monarchy, with the founding of the Dijon faculty of law in 1722, at the instigation of King Louis XV of France.
After the French Revolution, between 1805 and 1809, Emperor Napoleon I of France founded the faculties of Science, Arts and Medicine, at the hear...t of Dijon.
150 years later, in the 1950’s, the entire University, along with its new faculties, settled on the beautiful current campus, at the doors of the city centre.
Over the past 20 years, five other campuses have been created all across Burgundy. Each one of them contributes to making uB the leading higher education and research institution in the region.
With more than 300 European and worldwide partners, the University of Burgundy has been focusing on internationalising its teaching missions and research for many years.
The University has prioritised developing relations with Asia (China, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam) and Eastern Europe (most notably new members of the European Union).
Bilateral cooperation ties, developed in the course of the 20th century, such as the one with the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in Germany, made many joint bachelor, master and PhD degrees possible, sometimes with the help of a third academic partner.
uB also has partners in many other parts of the world where there is a particular scientific interest. For example in Mexico for motoring, Brazil for viti-vini culture and Niger for Earth Sciences.
The Dijon campus is the main one, with 24,000 students enrolled. Located 10 minutes away from the city centre, it spreads out over 120 ha in a very green environment. Several libraries, high quality sports facilities, a very attractive cultural centre, a permanent art exhibition, several university restaurants and halls of residence for students, a day nursery as well as 130 lively student associations are to be found on the campus.
One hour away from Dijon, in the South of Burgundy, this campus hosts one of the best research centres in computer sciences, more specifically in robotics and electronic vision. This campus runs a tripartite taught post-graduate course, VIBOT, which has received funding as part of the Erasmus Mundus programme. Le Creusot also hosts a University Institute of Technology which awards two year diplomas and bachelor degrees in various technological subjects. This small campus welcomes numerous international students.
Settled in Nevers, located in the West of Burgundy, this campus hosts the very attractive Institute of Automotive and Transport Engineering (ISAT). Over 500 students learn Mechanics and Energetics, in close contact with the automobile industry and the famous Formula 1 Nevers/Magny Cours circuit. Strong links have been set up with Chinese and Malaysian universities, and the institute offers several joint Masters and PhD programmes.
