The French higher education system is not only one of the best in the world – it is also open to all!
The quality of French higher education is widely recognised throughout the world. French institutions figure prominently in the Shanghai Classification of Universities, in the rankings of the Financial Times and Times Higher, and in the European Report on Science and Technologies published by the European Commission.
Each year, France makes massive investments in education and research. In fact, education is the largest category of government spending, accounting for more than 20% of the budget.
Each year more than 278 000 international students choose France for their higher education.
The world’s fifth-largest economy, France is also the fourth most popular destination for international students. The country remains committed to its long-standing policy of equal treatment for domestic and international students. Some examples of that policy: tuition rates at French institutions are identical for all students. For programs leading to national diplomas, tuition rates are set by law. All students, regardless of origin, enjoy the same benefits (health coverage, housing assistance).
In France, the academic year begins in September or October and ends in May or June, depending on the institution and program. The year is punctuated by vacations, including two weeks at the end of the year (Christmas and New Year’s). The two semesters are divided by a short break following final examinations at the end of the first semester. The summer vacation lasts more than two months and always includes the months of July and August.
Lectures are given in lecture halls accommodating from 100 to 1 000 learners. The professor speaks, while his or her students listen and take notes. Professors often prepare summaries of their lectures to help students prepare for their exams.
In sections and labs, small groups of students meet to apply or explore in greater detail the material covered in lectures. Attendance at sections and labs is mandatory, whereas attendance at the lectures is not.
In career-oriented programs offered in the universities (DUT programs, professional degrees and masters), internships and practical training are required in addition to the small-group sections and labs.
The Université Savoie Mont Blanc organized this autumn its third international week, an event dedicated to international mobility and cooperation projects with foreign partners, this year under the sign of the 30 years of the Erasmus + program. Different types of events were organized on the three campuses of the USMB: conferences on international mobility opportunities for students, workshops for staff wishing to develop existing or create new networks of collaborations, a mobility fair allowing the various actors to meet and exchange and festive moments and conviviality. 67 partners representing 47 institutions from 28 countries with which the USMB and its units have links, have travelled for three beautiful days of meetings or for the entire week. In addition to meetings with the students on the stands, the partners had the opportunity to discover each campus to better understand the organization and operation of the institution, its training units and its laboratories.
