ISCEM is located at Praça do Príncipe Real, nº 27, in the historic centre of Lisbon. Its building, with a meticulously restored original design, fits the architectural point of view of the historic centre built after the earthquake that destroyed Lisbon in mid-eighteenth century. The creation of ISCEM was based on Government Ordinance on 24 October, by the Ministry of Education, who approved its plans of study in higher education and recognized the value of the diplomas conferred, corresponding to the title of the degree course in public education.
ISCEM, created in 1990, was established as an innovative project, with the primary objective to achieve the highest level of development in the areas of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Information and Journalism, and Management. In this context, develops its activity in three complementary vectors: higher studies, research and connection to society and business community.
ISCEM Educational project lies in strong connection to the business community, with a teaching model that values know-how.
This pedagogical model includes conducting semi-annual thematic projects based on empirical knowledge (Ateliers), and internships, whose aim is to mitigate the distance that normally separates the theoretical and its practical concretization. Following the most modern teaching methods, these internships allow students to have a general education and a cyclical perspective of the company, where they can put in to the test in direct contact with reality the validity of their theoretical knowledge and their own intellectual skills.
ISCEM considers of high importance the integration between knowledge and its application, encouraging the relationship between education and society, and in this sense, ISCEM is characterized in its nature as a higher education institution, which seeks the specialization in Social and Behavioural Sciences, Information and Communication, and Management, in a cross-sectional view.
ISCEM"s mission is to ensure consistent progress of society, stimulating sustainable human development, through production and transmission of knowledge, dissemination of culture, economical growth, research activities and other services to the community. ISCEM is focused on the study of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Communication and Information Sciences, and Management. It looks to ensure the knowledge and innovation in these areas in a transversal way. It also aims the training and integration of well prepared professionals in the labour market, as well as the collaboration within the business community.
In ISCEM we believe that an integrated approach involving Social and Behavioural Sciences, Communication and Information Sciences, and Management is fundamental. In a complex and demanding society, where communication lays as a social and business vector, this approach is a contribution to an informed, constructive and innovative position. Thus, an integrated perspective, an oriented research, as well as a professionalized training seem to be essential to meet the expectations of the community and the needs of the labour market. As an institution of higher education, ISCEM seeks to value a practice knowledge associated with deep academic research, conscientious of the challenges of contemporary society. Through academic excellence, ISCEM aspires to be an academic reference, especially in the Lusophone world, allocating researchers and renewed professional in the labour market.
This axis reflects the scientific and academic vocation of the Institute. Comprises an interdisciplinary approach that allows, on the one hand, an awareness of the multiple variables of the society by the business world, on the other, an effective response of the academia to the challenges of companies. It has two complementary pillars: the high-level studies and the oriented-research. ISCEM intends to develop undergraduate and post-graduate cycle of studies, as well as advanced training courses, within the field of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Information and Communication and Management Sciences.
The research is carried out according to ISCEM scientific branch, within or through the exchange of researchers with other recognized Institutions. Being a high education institution, ISCEM seeks an oriented research that meets practical challenges and can be useful to society and the business community.
It also seeks to create an environment and a normative framework to encourage the participation of the academic staff in research activities, such as case studies or surveys. This should result in the publication of articles in national and international scientific journals, the development of research or learning projects and the participation/organization of scientific meetings, such as workshops, conferences, seminars, workshops or roundtables.
