The Red Cross University College (formerly the Red Cross School of Nursing) was founded in 1867 by Emmy Rappe and was the first secular nursing education in Sweden. Since the start, we have given nursing students the competence and skills required for global work and also, contributed to the development of the Swedish healthcare system.
The University College was previously located at Sab...batsberg General Hospital but was relocated to the campus of the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), central Stockholm, in 2004. Part of our bright and airy office building dates from the second half of the 19th century. The latest addition at the Red Cross University College is our newly renovated Student Centre. It stood finished in December 2012 and aims to give our students a stimulating area in which to socialise and relax.
We offer an inclusive learning environment where a Student Council, involved in the promotion and development of education, represents student interests. At present, the University College has more than 60 employees and around 650 students.
We cherish our history and follow with pride all qualified nurses wearing their Red Cross nursing brooch throughout their professional career.
In order to give a historical background to the Red Cross University College, we need to go back to year 1859 and a Swiss banker by the name of Henry Dunant. Henry Dunant experienced at first-hand the horrors of war on the battlefields of Solferino in Italy. Though only passing through, he chose not to close his eyes to the atrocities he witnessed including wounded and dying soldiers. Instead, he provided care and assistance and created history by not discriminating between who he gave help to. His humanitarian approach lies at the very heart of the Red Cross Movement and is still today our guiding star.
‘Is it not possible in times of peace to form relief organisations with the aim of interested and qualified volunteers giving care to the wounded in times of war?’ wrote Henry Dunant following his experiences on the battlefield. Said and done. The Red Cross was established in Geneva in 1863 whereupon Sweden joined in 1865. Today, the Red Cross Movement is the largest humanitarian network in the world.
The very first Red Cross nurses were primarily trained to take care of wounded in war and in 1897, two Swedish Red Cross nurses were sent to the war in Greece. In 1912, the first Red Cross ambulance was sent to Greece.
The principles and activities of the Red Cross Movement provide an important basis for the training programmes we offer. The Red Cross University College has always enjoyed an active international profile that still today, enriches and characterises our education and training programmes.
