Sophiahemmet University is a leading higher educational institution in the field of nursing science in Sweden. The University has in total, approximately 1 500 students on a yearly basis. Approximately 450 of these students study the three-year Bachelor`s programme in nursing science (180 higher education credits). This programme is one of the most popular nursing science programmes offered i...n Sweden with a large number of applicants each year (approximately 5000 applicants from all over Sweden). The University also offers a variety of educational programmes at advanced level, such as Specialist Nursing programmes, as well as Bachelor, Master and Diploma programmes. These programmes are given in Swedish. High quality research within nursing science and medical science is also carried out at the University.
Sophiahemmet University actively works to develop internationalization in order to increase cultural diversity among students and teaching staff. One important aim is to increase the number of students who wish to come to our University from countries both within and outside the EU. Sophiahemmet University is fully owned by Sophiahemmet Association, a non-profit organization, which also is a healthcare provider at Sophiahemmet Hospital. The hospital is regarded as a high-quality private hospital, offering a wide range of specialized inpatient and outpatient services.
Sophiahemmet University originates from the nursing study programme that was introduced in 1884 by the Swedish Queen Sophia. The Queen aimed to improve the quality of Swedish health care by introducing a programme that contained both theoretical education and clinical training. This concept was new in Sweden at the time and was inspired by the ideas behind the training school of nursing that had been established by Florence Nightingale at St Thomas" Hospital in London. In line with the intentions of Queen Sophia, Sophiahemmet University aims to promote human health and well-being nationally and internationally by conducting high-quality education and research that develops healthcare and meets society"s need for well-trained and competent personnel.
Sophiahemmet University is based on the nursing school that Queen Sophia started on New Year"s Day 1884. The queen wanted to enhance the quality of Swedish healthcare by introducing a new concept for nursing education in Sweden, with both theoretical and clinical education. The pre-picture was the nursing school that Florence Nightingale founded at St. Thomas"s Hospital in London, already in 1860.
During the first years, the education was conducted at the "Home for Nurses" on Upplandsgatan (formerly Gråbergsgatan). The first presidency of the school became Alfhild Ehrenborg, educated at Florence Nightingale in England. The clinical part of the education was conducted first at Sabbatsberg Hospital, but was moved to the Seraphim lasaret in 1886. The collaboration with the Seraphim lasaret went on until Karolinska Hospital"s accession in 1940, when the practical training in most specialties was placed there.

As soon as the Nursing School was founded, the Queen considered it important to start an educational hospital, where her ideas could be carried out without protests from a many times untrue doctor"s year. The plans were put into operation and in 1889 the Sophia home was opened. The operation of the hospital was funded by King Oscar II and Queen Sophia. The gift certificate says bl. a. that the hospital would be responsible for providing temporary care to the sick of all social classes while serving as a basic educational institution for nursing students;
Nursing education at Sophiahemmet was gradually expanded and was from the 1905 year"s education plan to 3 years. This was a long time, compared to the one-year education still in the 1910s around the country. Sophia Health Nursing School became well-known and applications were streamed, not only from Sweden but also from Norway and Finland. The well-trained Sophia sisters were also sought after, both in public and in private health care.
The textbook "Lectures for Sophia Nurse Nursing Students" was published in 1899. The book was for many years the only textbook aimed specifically at prospective nurses, and was therefore used diligently at nursing schools around the country. Prior to the publication of the fourth edition in 1962, the book therefore changed its name to "Nursing Booklet for Nursing Students". During the more than 60 years the book was published, several well-known names were included as authors, including the two doctors Gunnar Bierke, then Professor of Internal Medicine at Karolinska Institutet, and Nanna Svartz, Sweden"s first female professor of medicine.
