SLU develops the knowledge about how to use natural, biological land and water resources in a sustainable manner. Education, research and environmental monitoring and assessment are ...pursued at some thirty locations all over the country. The main campuses are Alnarp, Umeå and Uppsala.
SLU develops the understanding and sustainable use and management of biological natural resources. This is achieved by research, education and environmental monitoring and assessment, in collaboration with the surrounding community. SLU is a world-class university in the fields of life and environmental sciences. We dare to question established knowledge through critical thinking and an open, inquiring perspective. Our university produces world-class research. We ask the big questions about nature, animals and life itself. Our knowledge forms the foundation of a sustainable, thriving and better world.
SLU values express the organisation"s common fundamental values. These provide guidance in everyday life, by describing what the starting point for you actiivity is, for contacts with the outside world, and how we behave towards each other and others. All SLU employees are included in these values. The fundamental values are:

Our activities affect the environment directly through our use of resources, travel, emissions etc. However, we can also influence the environment indirectly through our unique expertise in the area. SLU contributes to an ecologically, socially and financially sustainable development. Environmental thinking and environmental aspects are integrated in all decision-making and are part of all activities within SLU’s organisational units.
SLU contributes to Agenda 2030 with innovative research, research-focused teaching, environmental monitoring and assessment (EMA) and more. Around 50 Swedish public authorities have come together to help bring about the transition needed in society. SLU’s mission statement is closely linked to these global goals, and SLU was the first university to sign the joint declaration of intent.
SLU’s public sector role, which initially only concerned the land-based sector, is broader and more developed these days. The goal to clarify the consequences of various trade-offs between production and sustainable goals dovetails with Agenda 2030, which emphasises the importance of integrated approaches and solutions in order to meet the 17 goals. Our public sector role also has a global aspect in that our areas of responsibility are connected to societal challenges such as food, water and energy supply, urbanisation, climate change, transition to a bio-based economy, etc.
Collaboration with low-income countries is present within all areas of research, and 20 per cent of SLU’s peer-reviewed scientific publications have co-authors from universities in low-income countries or from international research institutes that work with global development. SLU is the only Swedish university with a global development strategy. SLU Global develops these operations, among other things by thematically prioritising broad collaboration within SLU and with external parties.
SLU’s courses and programmes at undergraduate and Master’s level comprise professional programmes that cannot be found at any other Swedish higher education institution. Students can become agronomists, horticulturists, forest officers, veterinarians, veterinary nurses and landscape architects. These courses and programmes are very important for the national skill supply. SLU also co-runs two civil engineering programmes and offers a number of Master’s programmes relating to its strong research domains. The number of international Master’s students is high, and this contributes to global continuing professional development.
