Diaconia University of Applied Sciences (Diak) prepares students for national and international roles in social and pastoral work.
Diak is Finland’s largest provider of UAS-level education in social work. In the health and social care sector, it is the only national UAS offering education and services for workplace organisations across Finland.
Diak is responsible for over 90% of ...the provision of UAS-level education that qualifies graduates for diaconal and youth work roles in the Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Finland. Approximately one in four of Diak graduates complete a diaconal degree.
Through its RDI activities, Diak participates in the regional, national and international development of its educational fields.
Diak offers a multicultural and multi-faith learning and working environment. Students and employees are not required to be members of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Finland.

At Diak, the aim is that quality management should be an intrinsic part of the everyday activities of both staff members and students and support open and interactive culture across all our activities.
Diak’s quality system provides the framework and defines the responsibilities and measures of continuous development. The quality system covers all functions of the UAS, from its core tasks to support services and management. Each staff member and student contributes to the quality of Diak’s operations.
The quality system is based on the cycle of continuous improvement, which consists of operational planning, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and development.
Quality work is closely linked to Diak’s strategy and the associated targets and annual resource planning. The quality system supports Diak’s strategic aims.
The provision of reliable monitoring and assessment data is an important part of the quality system. In addition to the monitoring of statistics and target outcomes, feedback from students, staff members and stakeholders is also an important source of information. Feedback provides the basis for our operational development.
Diak participates in the quality system audit of the Finnish Education Evaluation Centre every six years and develops its quality system based on the auditors’ recommendations. Today, Diak has a well-established place in the Finnish and international higher education field.
We are the largest higher education provider in the social services sector with approximately 3,000 students in our programmes. Our organisation is divided into four operational units which together employ around 250 people.
Diak educates a diverse range of experts for church community work and social service roles. Our wide range of services and RDI activities enable us to engage in active dialogue with broader society and help us innovate solutions to current and future challenges.

Diak offers all students an opportunity to complete a part of their studies abroad. Questions of internationality and multiculturality form a natural part of education at Diak. Opportunities of mobility and other programmes are used actively for impoving students’ vocational skills and strengthening Diak’s and its partner organizations’ common development work.
For Bachelor and Master level students research work in an international setting is encouraged. The curriculum and implementation plans encourage internationalization. Monitoring and evaluation by students, partners and staff are used for developing activities.
Diak’s education gives the student skills and competences for international and multicultural tasks which focus on ensuring equal participation for all people. Every staff member at Diak has an equal opportunity for internationalization as weel. In staff mobility a special care is taken to ensure participation of administrative staff in mobility activities.
Diak’s education considers international working life requirements, so international interaction of academic and other professionals is important.
Diak’s international activities mostly take place in Europe, Asia and Africa. When selecting new partner organisations profile and possibilities for bilateral mobility, joint curriculum development, research and other development projects are evaluated by international relations experts and academic staff. In educational development projects Diak has selected the development of joint modules and joint degrees as a tool for internationalisation of education.
